Box Score 2 Bridgeport, Conn. (March 23, 2012)—Mount St. Mary's dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Sacred Heart on Friday afternoon. The Mount lost the opener, 10-5, before falling in the second game, 4-2, to fall to 6-16 on the year and 0-6 in the Northeast Conference.
In the opening game, the Mount jumped to a 2-0 lead with by scoring single runs in each of the first two innings. Michael Foster opened the game with a single, moved all the way to third base on a Nick Walker sacrifice, and scored on a Mark Quaranta groundout.
In the second, Andrew Clow walked, Tyler Skidmore doubled and Jay Knight's single to left gave the Mount a 2-0 advantage.
Sacred Heart answered with two runs in the bottom of the second when Rob Griffith doubled, Dave Boisture tripled, and then scored on a sacrifice fly.
The Pioneers took the lead on a sacrifice fly in the fourth, and took control with a five-run fifth. Hunter Phillips had an RBI single and John Murphy a two-run double in the frame. Boisture added a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to stretch the lead to 10-2.
The Mount scored three times in the top of the eighth for the final score of 10-5. Quaranta, Winter and Sam Nott all singled to load the bases with one out. Clow walked to force home Quaranta and Ryan Owens followed with a single to center to plate Winter. Skidmore added a sacrifice fly to complete the scoring.
Foster went 2-for-4 and Winter 2-for-3 at the plate in the loss. Starting pitcher Dan Horner allowed six runs on seven hits in four innings of work. Thomas Williams tossed two innings of scoreless relief while Chris Campbell allowed two runs in two innings of relief.
The Pioneers posted a 4-2 victory in the second game of the twinbill. The Pioneers jumped to a 4-0 lead after two innings and held on for the victory.
Sacred Heart scored an unearned run in the first and scored three times in the second. Mount starter Scott Nickerson loaded the bases with three walks, and Murphy then hit a triple to clear the bases to give the Pioneers a 4-0 lead.
The Mount got on the scoreboard in the fourth when Foster tripled and then scored on a Walker sacrifice fly. Mount St. Mary's made things interesting in the top of the seventh getting the tying run to the plate. Quaranta singled and scored on a Clow two-out double. Sacred Heart pitcher Nick Leiningen was able to get a ground out to end the game.
Foster went 2-for-3 at the plate in game two as the Mount managed just four hits. Nickerson recovered from his slow start to allow four runs and just two hits in 4.2 innings of work. Andrew Schrock pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief for the Mount.
Sacred Heart has now won 10 in a row against the Mount and holds a 25-12 lead in the all-time series.
The teams complete the four-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 10:00 a.m.
