Mount Baseball Posts 10-6 Win at Navy

Box Score

Annapolis, Md. (March 21, 2012)—Mount St. Mary's snapped a five-game losing streak with a 10-6 win at Navy on Wednesday afternoon at Max Bishop Stadium.  Nick Walker, Sam Nott and Ryan Owens each had three hits to pace the Mount to the victory.

Nott went 3-for-4 with three runs scored for the Mountaineers while Owens went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a pair of RBI in the game.  Walker finished the day 3-for-6 at the plate with a stolen base while Andrew Clow was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI.  Mark Quaranta was 2-for-4 with a pair of walks to move his average to .408 on the year.

Starting pitcher Chris Del Vecchio struck out five while allowing three runs in five innings to improve to 2-0 on the season.  Ben Smallenbroek allowed three runs in 2.1 innings of relief while Nick Riley closed out the win with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

The Mount (6-14) sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs in the top of the third inning to take the early lead.  Brandon Scott walked to open the frame while Quaranta drew a two-out walk to put runners on first and second.  Josh Winter, who entered the game hitting .500 with runners in scoring position, singled to right to plate Scott with the first run.  Nott was then hit by a pitch and Andrew Clow followed with a two-run double to make it 3-0.  Nott scored the fourth run when he scampered home on a wild pitch and Owens singled home Clow to give the Mount the 5-0 advantage.

Navy got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth.  Greg Dupell doubled and scored on a Chance Jones triple.  Kash Manzelli's single then scored Jones to cut the Mount lead to 5-2.

The Mount answered with two runs in the top of the fifth for a 7-2 lead.  Nott singled and Clow was hit by a pitch.  Owens moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt, and the two scored on an error by Navy's second baseman.  After Michael Foster walked, Walker came through with an RBI single to stretch the advantage to 8-2.

The Midshipmen got a run back in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of Del Vecchio getting wild.  With two outs and nobody on base, Del Vecchio hit a batter and walked two to load the bases, and allowed a run to score on a wild pitch.

Owens added an RBI double in the sixth to score Clow, who had singled, to push the Mount lead to 9-3.  After Navy got a run back in the seventh, Nott singled, Owens doubled and pinch-hitter Jay Knight had an RBI groundout for a 10-4 advantage.

Alex Azor cut the Mount lead to 10-6 with a two-run single in the bottom half of the eighth inning.  Riley, however, was able to end the threat with a groundout and a strikeout.

The Mount now holds a 6-2 lead in the all-time series with Navy since moving to NCAA Division I in 1989, including wins in the past four matchups.

The Mount returns to action on Friday, March 24, with a 3:00 p.m. game at Sacred Heart in the first of a four-game Northeast Conference series.
