Mount Baseball Sweeps Maryland-Eastern Shore

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Princess Anne, Md. (March 13, 2012)—Mount St. Mary's swept a doubleheader at Maryland-Eastern Shore on Tuesday afternoon.  The Mount captured the opening game, 11-6, and complete the sweep with a 6-0 victory in the nightcap.

In game two, Ben Smallenbroek and Dan Horner combined to toss the six-hit shutout.  Smallenbroek struck out four while allowing four hits in 4.2 innings to pick up his first collegiate win.  Dan Horner finished the shutout by striking out six in 2.1 innings of relief to earn his first save of the year.

Jack Schwartz went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI while Jay Knight went 2-for-3 with an RBI to pace the Mount (4-9) offense.

Schwartz doubled and scored on a Knight base hit to give the Mount a 1-0 lead in the top of the second.  Schwartz drove home Andrew Clow in the fourth and Mark Quaranta added an RBI single in the fifth to make it 3-0.

Michael Foster's two-run single in the sixth stretched the lead to 5-0 while Tom Healy's sacrifice fly in the seventh closed out the scoring.

In the opening game, Foster and Quaranta each had three hits while Josh Winter and Tom Healy had three RBI to pace the Mount to the victory.  Foster finished the game 3-for-6 at the plate with two steals and three runs scored while Quaranta went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI.  Winter went 2-for-4 with three RBI with Walker going 2-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI and a stolen base.

Karl Lamont earned the win, striking out eight while allowing four runs and eight hits in six innings of work.  Thomas Williams pitched two innings of scoreless relief with Chris Campbell allowing a pair of runs in one inning of work.

In the opening game, Foster singled with one out in the third, stole second base and scored on Walker's RBI single to even the score at 1-1.  Winter followed with an RBI single and Mo Moriarty walked with the bases loaded for a 3-1 Mount advantage.

After UMES evened the score with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, Winter added his second RBI single of the game in the fourth to drive in Foster and give the Mount a 4-3 lead.  UMES (0-16) answered with a run in the bottom of the frame to tie the game again, 4-4.

The Mount regained the lead with three runs in the top of the sixth inning.  Foster started the rally with a leadoff single.  He came around to score on a Walker RBI double.  After Walker stole third base, Quaranta followed with his second double of the game to plate Walker for a 6-4 Mount lead.  Quaranta later scored on a UMES error.

The Mount took control with four runs in the eighth.  The scoring started when Walker walked, moved to third on a Quaranta single, and scored on a Winter sacrifice fly.  After Sam Nott walked, Healy then drilled a three-run homer to right-center field to give the Mountaineers an 11-4 advantage.

The Mount returns to action tomorrow with a 3:00 p.m. home game against Georgetown at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus.
