Box Score Winter Haven, Fla. (February 24, 2012)--Mount St. Mary's was outslugged by Saint Louis, 13-11, in the season opener on Friday afternoon in Florida. The top four hitters in the Mount lineup went 11-for-18 with seven runs scored and seven RBI.
After falling behind 4-1 early in the game, the Mount scored three times in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take a 6-4 advantage. The Billikens (3-2) rallied to take a 13-6 advantage after seven innings. The Mount loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth, and after cutting the deficit to 13-11, twice had the tying run at the plate.
Leadoff hitter Nick Walker went 4-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI while Mark Quaranta was 2-for-5 with a run scored. Freshman Ryan Owens hit third and was 2-for-4 with three runs scored while cleanup hitter Josh Winter went 3-for-4 with two doubles and four runs batted in.
Jay Knight added a 2-for-4 day with a double and a steal while Michael Foster and Mo Moriarty also had a hit in the loss.
Starting pitcher Vincent Molesky allowed four runs and six hits in 4.1 innings, striking out four while walking one.
The teams continue their four-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow.
