Wheeler's Helping Hand Lifts Men's Soccer Past Howard, 2-0

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Patrick Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) registered assists on two goals to lift Mount St. Mary's past Howard 2-0 in non-conference men's soccer action on Monday night.

Wheeler, who leads the team with three helpers on the year, served a perfect ball to Zoncher Dennis (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) in the 10th minute and then had another nice serve to Kyle Patrick (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) in the 43th minute. The sophomore has posted six assists in his last nine games and notched his second-career two assist performance.

Peter Steve (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) made one save for the Mount (2-3-1) in his first collegiate shutout. Ian Hendrie (Potomac, Md./St. Andrews Episcopal School) dished out a helper on Dennis' goal and Jimmy Ockford (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) added an assist on Patrick's tally.

Eric Hamilton turned away four shots for the Bison (1-5-1) in the loss. The Mountaineers defense held Howard to no shots in the first 81 minutes of the match while the Bison recorded three shots in the final nine minutes of the match.

Mount St. Mary's scored twice in the first half and never looked back to improve to 2-0 at Waldron Family Stadium this season. The Mountaineers are 4-1-4 in the last nine meetings against Howard, including two-straight 2-0 victories.

Hendrie got the scoring started when he passed the ball back to Wheeler, who made a perfect serve outside the box and Dennis finished the play with a header into the netting at 9:43 to give the Mount a 1-0 edge. It was the freshman's second career goal.

In the closing minutes of the first half, Ockford started the second goal of the night in the center of the field and passed the ball down to the left end line to Wheeler, who made another great pass to find Patrick at 42:57 for a 2-0 lead. Patrick now has a goal and an assist for three points this season and eight tallies and six assists for 24 points in his career.

After not being able to get a shot off on the Mountaineers for 81 minutes, Jeremy Swann gave Howard its first scoring chance, but missed wide at 81:50. Rahman Alarape had a header stopped by Steve at 83:27 before Frederick Todd, III missed wide for the final scoring chance by the Bison at 85:52.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday against LaSalle in the final non-conference game of the year. The game against Howard started a four-game homestand for the Mount while the squad will host five of the next six games at Waldron Family Stadium.
