Box Score 2 Mount St. Mary's lost both games of a doubleheader at Duke on
Sunday afternoon. The Blue Devils took the opener, 2-1,
before earning a 4-1 win in the nightcap at Jack Coombs Field.
In the opener, Duke scored in the bottom of the eighth to break
a 1-1 tie and earn the victory. Chris Marconcini walked with
one out to start the rally. Max
Brittenham came on in relief of Mount starter Karl
Lamont and got a fly out for the second out of the
inning. Duke's Joe Pedevillano followed with a bunt single
put runners on first and second for Jordan Betts, who came through
with an RBI single for the go-ahead run.
Duke(23-26) took an early 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the
bottom of the first. Jeff Kremer reached on an error, moved
to third on a Marconcini base hit and scored on a Will
Piwnica-Worms sacrifice fly.
Mount St. Mary's (14-32) evened the score in the top of the
sixth. Andrew
Caron doubled and moved to third when Kyle
Kane reached on an error. Shane
Eyler's single to right plated Caron with the tying run and put
runners on first and second with no outs. Duke pitcher Marcus
Stroman got out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts and a caught
stealing.
Lamont allowed two runs (one earned) in 7.1 innings in the game
for the Mount. Stroman picked up the win for Duke, allowing
one run in seven innings, giving way to Ben Grisz, who pitched two
scoreless innings for the save.
In the second game, Duke scored a run in the bottom of the fifth
to take a 2-1 lead and added two more in the seventh to post the
4-1 victory.
After Duke scored in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead,
the Mount scored a run on three singles in the top of the
fifth. Josh
Winter and Zach
Helman singled to put runners on first and second for Tommy
Flynn, who drove home Winter with a single of his own.
Anthony D'Allesandro's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth put
Duke ahead while Ryan Munger added a two-run single in the seventh
to round out the scoring.
Kane had a pair of hits in the loss for the Mount while starting
pitcher Nick Riley allowed two runs in 5.2 innings.
The Mount returns to action on Thursday, May 12, with a 3:00
p.m. game against NEC rival Monmouth at E.T. Straw Family Stadium
on campus.
