Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (May 14, 2011)--Mount St. Mary's lost to
Monmouth,12-3, to close out the 2011 season in a game played at
E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus. Mark
Quaranta went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in to pace the
Mountaineers in the game.
Monmouth (34-17, 25-7 NEC) scored four times in the top of the
third inning to take the lead. The Hawks loaded the bases
with no outs and scored the first run of the game on a Mount
error. After starter Max
Brittenham got a pair of outs, Monmouth's Josh Boyd cleared the
bases with a double for the 4-0 lead.
The Mount answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the
fourth. Andrew
Caron walked, stole second and moved to third on a wild
pitch. With two outs, Quaranta laced a ball back up the
middle to score the first run. Zach
Helman followed with a double to score Quaranta to cut the
deficit to 4-2.
Mount St. Mary's (15-35, 7-25 NEC) cut the Monmouth lead to 4-3
in the bottom of the sixth. Caron singled to open the inning
and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A Monmouth error put
runners on first and third for Quaranta, who delivered a single to
left to make the score 4-3. Monmouth pitcher Pat Light was
able to get the last two outs to escape further damage.
The Hawks then scored six runs in the top of the seventh to seal
the win. Monmouth again loaded the bases and a Mount error
allowed the first run of the inning to score. Cal Costanzo
followed with a two-run double and Jake Gronsky's safety squeeze
plated another run. Boyd and Jamie Rosenkranz added RBI hits
to end the frame.
Monmouth scored a pair of runs in the ninth to round out the
scoring.
Quaranta led the Mount with a 2-for-4 day with two RBI and a run
scored. Caron added a pair of runs and a hit with Eyler and
Helman each going 1-for-4 in the game.
Brittenham allowed 10 runs (four earned) in 6.1 innings while
striking out eight batters. The senior finishes his career
fourth all-time at the Mount with 185 strikeouts.
Eyler finished second all-time at the Mount with 216 hits and
193 career games played while fellow senior Kyle
Kane finished third with 186 career games played.
Prior to the game, the Mount honored its senior class of 12
players that included Alex
Andrews, Brittenham, Caron, Eyler, Tommy
Flynn, Helman, Kane, Chris
McDermott, Brett
Moore, Tony
Quaranta, Colin
Stuver and Marshall
Thomason.
Flynn finished the season as the Mount's leader in batting
average (.324), hits (57), runs scored (35), doubles (17), triples
(2) and home runs (5).
