Mount Baseball Downed by NEC Leader Monmouth, 9-2

Emmitsburg, Md. (May 12, 2011)-Mount St. Mary's lost to first-place Monmouth, 9-2, on Thursday afternoon in Northeast Conference action at Straw Family Stadium on campus.  Michael Foster went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Mount in the game.

Monmouth (32-16, 23-6 NEC), which clinched the NEC regular season title with the win, scored a pair of runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth to erase an early Mount lead.  In the fifth, a hits batsman and a pair of singles loaded the bases for Josh Boyd, who singled to right field to plate two runs for a 3-2 Monmouth lead.  Ryan Terry doubled and scored on Jake Gronsky's single in the top of the fifth.

Nick Pulsonetti hit two-run homers in both the seventh and eighth innings to seal the win for the Hawks while the final run scored on a wild pitch in the ninth.

The Mount (14-33, 6-23 NEC) took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning.  Zach Helman laced a base hit to center field and Josh Winter walked to put runners on first and second with one out.  After a strikeout, Foster drilled a double to center field to plate both runners to give the Mount a 2-1 lead.

The Hawks scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning on a Pulsonetti RBI single.

Brett Moore got the start for the Mountaineers, allowing four runs (three earned) in 5.1 innings.  Karl Lamont allowed three runs in 2.1 innings out of the bullpen while Peter DeCandia allowed a pair of runs in 1.1 innings of relief.

Pulsonetti finished 3-for-5 with two homers and five RBI for the Hawks while Terry was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.  Nick Meyers struck out six while allowing a pair of runs in eight innings to improve to 8-1 on the season.

The teams continue the four-game series with a noon doubleheader at Straw Family Stadium on campus.
