Mount Baseball Lets 9-0 Lead Slip Away in Loss at Long Island

Box Score

New York, N.Y. (May 1, 2011)-Mount St. Mary's saw a 9-0 lead slip away in an 11-9 loss at Long Island in the final game of a four-game series on Sunday afternoon.

The Mountaineers (12-30, 6-22 NEC) got on the scoreboard first on a solo home run by Andrew Caron in the top of the first inning.  The Mount added a pair of runs in the second when Shane Eyler scored on a Michael Foster groundout and Zach Helman scored on Brandon Scott's RBI single.

Four more runs in the top of the third extended the Mount St. Mary's advantage to 7-0.  Caron drove home Tom Healy with a base hit and then after stealing second and third, scored on an Eyler single.  Foster added an RBI when he reached on an error and Scott's second RBI single in as many innings gave the Mount a seven-run cushion.

Mount St. Mary's added two more runs in the top of the fourth on an Eyler RBI base hit and a Mark Quaranta fielder's choice to make it 9-0.

Long Island (26-15, 18-5), however, scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to get back into the game.  Matt Molbury's two-run single with the bases load got the Blackbirds on the scoreboard and Juan Castro followed with a two-run homer to make it 9-4.  An RBI groundout and back-to-back RBI singles from Sam Sciamiarelli and Tyler Jones made it a two-run game.

Derek Stupski's solo home run in the sixth cut the Mount's lead to 9-8.  The Blackbirds completed the rally with three runs in the bottom of the eighth.  Stupski walked with one out and moved to third on a Brad Greve two-base hit. Pete Leonello walked to load the bases, but reliever Buddy Fields struck out Sciamiarelli for the second out of the inning.  Jones, the NEC's leading hitter, came through with a two-out two-run single to give LIU a 10-9 lead.  Leonello scored on a wild pitch to add an insurance run.

Healy walked and Caron doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs in the ninth, but LIU closer Evan Zerff got out of the jam with two strikeouts and a groundout to end the game.

Eyler went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI in the loss while Caron was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI.  Scott added a 3-for-4 day at the plate with his team-leading 14th stolen base as well.

Jones went 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead LIU with Castro (3-for-4) and Stupski (3-for-3) adding big games as well.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Thursday, May 5, with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader with Maryland-Eastern Shore at Straw Family Stadium on campus.
