Flynn belted a go-ahead solo home run in the top of the ninth
and Max
Brittenham tossed his fourth consecutive complete game to lead
Mount St. Mary's to a 3-2 win at Central Connecticut State on
Friday afternoon.
Brittenham allowed one earned run with five strikeouts to earn
the victory. He improves to 3-2 on the season while lowering his
ERA to 2.12. The senior right-hander has tossed a complete-game in
each of his last four outings.
The Mount (12-13, 6-7 NEC) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the
fourth inning. Kane singled up the middle to lead off the frame
and Mark
Quaranta drove him in with a double down the right field
line.
Mount St. Mary's had a chance to extend the lead in the top of
the fifth, loading the bases with one out, but CCSU pitcher Todd
Savatsky escaped the jam with an inning-ending double play.
Central Connecticut State (10-12-1, 6-7 NEC) evened the score
with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth. J.P. Sportman and
Andy Lalli singled to put runners on first and second with one
out. Brittenham got Tyler McIntyre to hit a grounder to second
with the Mount getting Lalli on a force out. However, on the throw
to first on the try for the double-play was off the mark, allowing
Sportman to score the tying run.
The Mount escaped a jam in the bottom of the sixth to keep the
score tied. Jake Matuszak doubled and an error on Sean
Miller-Jones' sacrifice bunt put runners at the corners with no
outs. Pat Epps grounded to third and Helman was able to get
Matuszak out at the plate. After an infield single loaded the
bases, Brittenham retired the next two batters on a pop out and a
strikeout.
Mount St. Mary's threatened in the top of the seventh, loading
the bases with two outs, but Savatasky escaped the jam by getting
Kane to ground out.
The Mountaineers grabbed the lead in the top of the eighth. Shane
Eyler singled with one out and moved to third on a Winter base
hit. Eyler then scored on a force-out to put the Mount ahead,
2-1.
Miller-Jones erased the Mount's lead with one swing in the
bottom of the eighth, tying the score with a solo homer to left
field.
Flynn answered the Miller-Jones blast with a solo homer to lead
off the top of the ninth, lifting the Mount to a 3-2 lead.
CCSU threatened in the bottom of the ninth. Lalli was hit by a
pitch and pinch runner Normand Gosselin moved to second on a
sacrifice bunt. Brittenham, however, got the final two outs on
groundouts to earn the complete-game victory.
Scott went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Mount as eight of the
nine batters in the lineup recorded a hit.
Matuszak was 3-for-5 at the plate to pace CCSU while Savatsky
allowed three runs and nine hits in eight-plus innings of work.
The four-game series continues tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m.
doubleheader.
Game Notes: Central Connecticut State holds a
21-20 lead in the all-time series...The Mount, however, has a 16-8
record against the Blue Devils since 2005...The Mount is 9-3 over
its past 12 games on the road against CCSU.
