Mount Baseball Loses Two at Long Island

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Mount St. Mary's lost both games of a doubleheader at Long Island at LIU field on Saturday afternoon.  The Blackbirds won the opener, 6-2, before earning a 6-5 win in the nightcap.

In the second game, the Mount scored twice in the top of the second to take a 2-1 advantage.  Kyle Kane walked, stole second, and scored on a Mark Quaranta two-base hit.  Josh Winter followed with an RBI double of his own to give the Mount the lead.

LIU evened the score in the fourth on doubles by Diego Perez and Pete Leonello. Drew Walsh's RBI single in the first had given LIU the early lead.

The Mount (12-29, 6-21 NEC) had a chance to take the lead in the sixth, loading the bases with one out, but Justin Topa got a double-play to escape the jam.

The Blackbirds (25-15, 17-5 NEC) capitalized on the momentum by scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the win.  Matt Molbury had a pinch-hit single and Brad Greve followed with a bunt single to start the inning.  An error on the play put runners on second and third with one out.  A Mount error allowed the go-ahead run to score and Leonello's RBI bunt single made it a 4-2 lead.  A Mount error and a Walsh single pushed the LIU lead to four.

The Mountaineers rallied in the top of the seventh, but fell just short.  Shane Eyler and Winter singled ahead of Zach Helman, who belted a three-run homer to cut the deficit to one.  Brandon Scott had a two-out infield single and stole second to put the tying run in scoring position, but the Mount's final batter struck out to end the threat.

In the opening game, Long Island jumped to an early lead en route to the 6-2 victory.

The Blackbirds scored in the bottom of the first when Sam Sciamarelli stole third base and then scored when the throw was off the mark.

Sciamarelli had an RBI double and Tyler Jones an RBI single in the third to make it 3-0 and LIU score three times in the fifth to break the game open.  Sciamarelli had an RBI ground out with Drew Walsh adding a two-run double in the frame.

The Mount got a pair of runs in the sixth when Nick Walker singled and Brandon Scott doubled to put runners on second and third.  Andrew Caron followed with a two-run single to make the score 6-2.

Vincent Molesky struck out five while allowing six runs (four earned) in 4.1 innings in the loss.  Marshall Thomason pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.  Scott and Caron each had two hits in the loss.

The four-game series concludes tomorrow with a nine-inning game at 1:00 p.m.
