Box Score 2 Mount St. Mary's lost both games of a doubleheader at Long
Island at LIU field on Saturday afternoon. The Blackbirds won
the opener, 6-2, before earning a 6-5 win in the nightcap.
In the second game, the Mount scored twice in the top of the
second to take a 2-1 advantage. Kyle
Kane walked, stole second, and scored on a Mark
Quaranta two-base hit. Josh
Winter followed with an RBI double of his own to give the Mount
the lead.
LIU evened the score in the fourth on doubles by Diego Perez and
Pete Leonello. Drew Walsh's RBI single in the first had given LIU
the early lead.
The Mount (12-29, 6-21 NEC) had a chance to take the lead in the
sixth, loading the bases with one out, but Justin Topa got a
double-play to escape the jam.
The Blackbirds (25-15, 17-5 NEC) capitalized on the momentum by
scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the win.
Matt Molbury had a pinch-hit single and Brad Greve followed with a
bunt single to start the inning. An error on the play put
runners on second and third with one out. A Mount error
allowed the go-ahead run to score and Leonello's RBI bunt single
made it a 4-2 lead. A Mount error and a Walsh single pushed
the LIU lead to four.
The Mountaineers rallied in the top of the seventh, but fell
just short. Shane

Helman, who belted a three-run homer to cut the deficit to
one. Brandon
Scott had a two-out infield single and stole second to put the
tying run in scoring position, but the Mount's final batter struck
out to end the threat.
In the opening game, Long Island jumped to an early lead en
route to the 6-2 victory.
The Blackbirds scored in the bottom of the first when Sam
Sciamarelli stole third base and then scored when the throw was off
the mark.
Sciamarelli had an RBI double and Tyler Jones an RBI single in
the third to make it 3-0 and LIU score three times in the fifth to
break the game open. Sciamarelli had an RBI ground out with
Drew Walsh adding a two-run double in the frame.
The Mount got a pair of runs in the sixth when Nick
Walker singled and Brandon
Scott doubled to put runners on second and third. Andrew
Caron followed with a two-run single to make the score 6-2.
Vincent
Molesky struck out five while allowing six runs (four earned)
in 4.1 innings in the loss. Marshall
Thomason pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Scott
and Caron each had two hits in the loss.
The four-game series concludes tomorrow with a nine-inning game
at 1:00 p.m.
