Emmitsburg, Md. (April 3, 2011)--Andrew
Caron went 3-for-4 with five RBI to lead Mount St. Mary's to an
11-2 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday afternoon. The Mount
took three of four games in the weekend series to move to 12-13
overall and 5-7 in the Northeast Conference.
Caron capped his big day with a grand slam to cap a seven-run
eighth inning for the Mountaineers. Leading 4-1 heading into the
bottom of the eighth, Shane
Eyler singled, moved to second on a passed ball, stole third
after Sam
Nott was hit by a pitch, and scored on a passed ball to give
the Mount a 5-1 advantage. Zach
Helman walked and Brandon
Scott had a single through the right side on a perfectly
executed hit and run to score pinch runner Nick
Walker to push the lead to 6-1.
Tommy
Flynn was up next and reached base on a wild pitch on his third
strike, loading the bases for Michael
Foster, who worked a walk to plate Helman. Caron then drilled
a 1-1 pitch deep to right for his second homer of the year to cap
the rally and give the Mount a commanding 11-1 advantage.
The game was scoreless heading into the bottom of the fourth
before the Mount finally got to FDU starter Mike Eliasen. Caron
and Kyle
Kane had back-to-back doubles to provide the first run of the
game.
Mount St. Mary's added to the lead in the fifth when Helman led
off the frame with a solo shot to left. Later in the inning, Kane
came through with an RBI single to score Foster, who had walked and
stole second base.
The Knights (5-17, 2-6 NEC) got on the scoreboard in the top of
the sixth. Ryan Kresky walked to open the inning and advanced to
second on a groundout. Brian Dillon singled to center field to
move Kresky to third. Head coach Scott
Thomson brought in Karl
Lamont in relief of starter Brett
Moore at that point, and Erik Pollag greeted Lamont with an RBI
single. Lamont, however, got out of the jam by getting a groundout
double play on the next batter.
Caron added an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to score
Flynn, who had doubled to open the inning.
Helman went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Mount with two runs
scored and a stolen base. He lifted his average to a team-high
.387 with his three-hit game. Kane was 2-for-5 at the plate for
the Mount with two RBI. Kane is hitting .520 over his past six
contests. Shane
Eyler added a pair of hits, including a double in the victory,
as well.
Moore (2-2) gave the Mountaineers a solid start, allowing one
earned run in 5.1 innings of work. Lamont closed out the game
allowing one run in 3.2 innings to pick up his second save of the
year.
Mount St. Mary's is off until a four-game NEC series at Central
Connecticut State starting with a nine-inning game on Friday, April
8.
