Mount Baseball Drops Pair to Sacred Heart

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Emmitsburg, Md. (April 21, 2011)--Mount St. Mary's lost both ends of a doubleheader to visiting Sacred Heart at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus on Thursday afternoon.  Sacred Heart rallied for a 5-3 win in game one before posting a 10-2 victory in the nightcap.  The Mount hit four solo home runs in the twinbill.

The Mount (12-22, 6-16 NEC) started quickly in game one, hitting a pair of solo homers in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.  Tommy Flynn led off with a long ball for the Mount, marking the second straight game he has led off with a homer.  Flynn now leads the Mount with four home runs on the year.  Clean-up hitter Kyle Kane added a solo homer to right field to make it 2-0.

Mount St. Mary's extended the lead to 3-0 with a run in the bottom of the fourth.  Kane singled to right field and moved to second on a Shane Eyler sacrifice bunt.  After Kane moved to third on an error on a failed pickoff attempt, Mark Quaranta laced a double to left field to plate Kane.

The Pioneers (19-18, 11-7 NEC) started the comeback with a run in the top of the fifth.  Conor McEvoy, Steve Tedesco and Derick Horn each singled to load the bases for Dave Boisture, who hit a soft ground ball to third base for an infield hit to drive home McEvoy.

Sacred Heart cut the deficit to 3-2 in the seventh when John Murphy doubles, went to third on a fly ball and scored on a Tedesco ground out.  The Pioneers scored the winning run in the top of the eighth inning on a Murphy three-run homer.  Hunter Phillips, who doubled, was on second base with two outs when Rob Griffith reached first when his soft grounder to second base was misplaced, putting runners on the corners.  Murphy followed with a blast to right field for a 5-3 Sacred Heart lead.

Mount starter Max Brittenham allowed five runs (two earned) while striking out four in a complete-game loss.  It was Brittenham's sixth consecutive complete-game.  The last Mount player to post a complete game in six consecuitve starts was Dustin Pease in 2004.

Flynn, Kane, Eyler and Quaranta each had two hits in the loss.  Murphy was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI to pace Sacred Heart.  Troy Scribner struck out five in a complete-game win.

The Pioneers scored three times in the first in a 10-2 victory in the second game.  M.J. Schifano doubled to lead off the game and later scored on a J.J. Edwards base hit.  Griffith added an RBI groundout and Murphy an RBI single in the inning.

Eyler lofted a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to 3-1, but the Pioneers answered with a pair of runs in the third and five more in the fourth to take control of the game.  Mark Quaranta's solo home run in the fifth rounded out the scoring in the game.

Edwards went 4-for-5 with three runs scored for the Pioneers in game two while Griffith was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.  Nick Leiningen struck out five in a complete-game victory.

Quaranta was 2-for-2 while Eyler went 2-for-3 at the plate in the second game.  Mount starter Vincent Molesky was tagged for seven runs in three innings of work in the loss.  Reliever Patrick Moriarty had three strikeouts in a scoreless inning of relief.
