Box Score 2 Emmitsburg, Md. (April 21, 2011)--Mount St. Mary's lost both
ends of a doubleheader to visiting Sacred Heart at E.T. Straw
Family Stadium on campus on Thursday afternoon. Sacred Heart
rallied for a 5-3 win in game one before posting a 10-2 victory in
the nightcap. The Mount hit four solo home runs in the
twinbill.
The Mount (12-22, 6-16 NEC) started quickly in game one, hitting
a pair of solo homers in the bottom of the first inning to
take a 2-0 lead. Tommy Flynn led off with a long ball for the
Mount, marking the second straight game he has led off with a
homer. Flynn now leads the Mount with four home runs on the
year. Clean-up hitter Kyle Kane added a solo homer to right
field to make it 2-0.
Mount St. Mary's extended the lead to 3-0 with a run in the
bottom of the fourth. Kane singled to right field and moved
to second on a Shane Eyler sacrifice bunt. After Kane moved
to third on an error on a failed pickoff attempt, Mark Quaranta
laced a double to left field to plate Kane.
The Pioneers (19-18, 11-7 NEC) started the comeback with a run
in the top of the fifth. Conor McEvoy, Steve Tedesco and
Derick Horn each singled to load the bases for Dave Boisture, who
hit a soft ground ball to third base for an infield hit to drive
home McEvoy.
Sacred Heart cut the deficit to 3-2 in the seventh when John
Murphy doubles, went to third on a fly ball and scored on a Tedesco
ground out. The Pioneers scored the winning run in the top of
the eighth inning on a Murphy three-run homer. Hunter
Phillips, who doubled, was on second base with two outs when Rob
Griffith reached first when his soft grounder to second base was
misplaced, putting runners on the corners. Murphy followed
with a blast to right field for a 5-3 Sacred Heart lead.
Mount starter Max Brittenham allowed five runs (two earned)
while striking out four in a complete-game loss. It was
Brittenham's sixth consecutive complete-game. The last Mount
player to post a complete game in six consecuitve starts was Dustin
Pease in 2004.
Flynn, Kane, Eyler and Quaranta each had two hits in the
loss. Murphy was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI
to pace Sacred Heart. Troy Scribner struck out five in a
complete-game win.
The Pioneers scored three times in the first in a 10-2 victory
in the second game. M.J. Schifano doubled to lead off the
game and later scored on a J.J. Edwards base hit. Griffith
added an RBI groundout and Murphy an RBI single in the inning.
Eyler lofted a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the
second to cut the deficit to 3-1, but the Pioneers answered with a
pair of runs in the third and five more in the fourth to take
control of the game. Mark Quaranta's solo home run in the
fifth rounded out the scoring in the game.
Edwards went 4-for-5 with three runs scored for the Pioneers in
game two while Griffith was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three
RBI. Nick Leiningen struck out five in a complete-game
victory.
Quaranta was 2-for-2 while Eyler went 2-for-3 at the plate in
the second game. Mount starter Vincent Molesky was tagged for
seven runs in three innings of work in the loss. Reliever
Patrick Moriarty had three strikeouts in a scoreless inning of
relief.
The teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 11:00
a.m. at Straw Family Stadium on campus.
