Mount Baseball Splits Pair with Fairleigh Dickinson

Emmitsburg, Md. (April 2, 2011)--Mount St. Mary's split a doubleheader with visiting Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday afternoon at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus. The Mount earned a 6-2 win in the nightcap after falling 5-4 in extra innings in the opening game.

In the second game, the Mount scored three times in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the lead en route to the victory. The Knights started the game quickly when leadoff hitter Ryan Kresky homered to right field for a 1-0 advantage.

The Mount evened the score in the bottom of the third when Mark Quaranta drove home Brandon Scott with a two-out single to right-center field.

Mount St. Mary's (11-13, 4-7 NEC) took the lead with a three-run fourth. Kyle Kane and Shane Eyler singled to open the frame and moved up 90 feet on Michael Foster's sacrifice bunt. Scott followed with a clutch two-run single to left to give the Mount a 3-1 lead. Flynn then drove the ball down the right-field line for a two-base hit to plate Scott for a 4-1 advantage.

Mike Eliasen and Kresky singled to put runners on first and third with no outs in the fifth for the Knights (5-16, 2-5 NEC), but could only score one run on a Steven Laforge grounder to second base.

Flynn provided a web gem in the top of the seventh when he robbed Brian Dillon of a three-run homer. Flynn snagged the ball over the fence came down with the highlight-reel catch.

Kane belted a two-run homer to left field in the bottom of the fifth to provide insurance runs. Kane went 2-for-3 with a home, two runs scored and two RBI in the win while Scott also was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Flynn was 3-for-4 in the game while Quaranta was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI.

Michael Locondro allowed two runs in 4.2 innings to earn the win in the game. Karl Lamont struck out three in 1.1 innings of relief while Buddy Fields pitched a scoreless seventh for the Mount. Kresky went 3-for-4 in the loss for FDU while Mike Eliasen was 2-for-3 in the game.

In the opening game, Fairleigh Dickinson rallied for a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to force extra innings and earned the 5-4 win on the strength of a Kresky three-run homer in the top of the ninth.

The Mount scored twice in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 advantage. Kane walked and Josh Winter singled with one out to start the rally. An FDU error allowed Kane to score the first run of the inning. Flynn then beat out an infield hit to second base and when the throw to first trickled away, Winter was able to scamper home with the game's second run.

FDU rallied with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to force extra innings. Erik Pollag started the rally with a single to center field. Eric Anderson was up next and he drove a double down the right field line. Pollag was held up at third, but he was able to race home on the throw to second to cut the deficit to 2-1. After a strikeout, Anderson scored on a Mount error to even the score at 2-2.

The Knights took a 5-2 lead in the top of the ninth. D.J. Robinson and Mike Eliasen each singled and Kresky came through with a two-out three-run homer to deep center field to give FDU a 5-2 lead.

The Mount rallied in the bottom half of the inning. Josh Winter walked and pinch hitter Tom Healy belted a two-run homer to right field to cut the deficit to 5-4. Flynn walked and stole second base, but was left stranded.

Mark Quaranta went 2-for-5 at the plate for the Mount in the game while Winter had a pair of runs scored. Vincent Molesky struck out six while allowing two runs in 6.2 innings of work. Dan Horner took the loss, allowing three runs in 2.1 innings of relief.

Eliasen had two hits for FDU in the game. Nick Melchiorre pitched seven innings, allowing no earned runs, for FDU.

The teams complete the four-game series tomorrow with a nine-inning game at 1:00 p.m. at Straw Family Stadium.
