New Britain, Conn. (April 10, 2011)--Mount St.
Mary's lost at Central Connecticut State, 11-3, on Sunday afternoon
in the final game of a four-game series. With the loss, the Mount
drops to 12-16 overall and 6-10 in the Northeast Conference.
The Mount struck for the game's first run in the top of the
first on a Kyle Kane sacrifice fly. Tommy Flynn opened the inning
with a two-base hit and moved to third on Brandon Scott's single.
After an Andrew Caron walk loaded the bases with no outs, Kane
drove a ball to center field to drive in Flynn for the 1-0 lead.
CCSU avoided further damage by getting an inning-ending
double-play.
Flynn doubled and scored on a Caron single through the right
side to make it 2-0 in the top of the third, but the Blue Devils
(14-12-1, 9-7 NEC) evened the score in the fourth on a JP Sportman
triple and a Tyler McIntyre two-base hit.
Zach Helman's RBI single in the sixth gave the Mount a 3-2
advantage, but the Blue Devils scored three times in the bottom of
the inning to take the lead for good, 5-3. Sportman had a two-run
single and McIntrye an RBI triple in the frame.
The Blue Devils sealed the win with five runs in the seventh and
one more in the eighth for the 11-3 victory.
Flynn went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles for the Mount while
Michael Foster was 2-for-4 in the loss. Starter Brett Moore (1-3)
allowed five runs in 5.1 innings to take the loss.
Sportman was 4-for-4 with two runs and three RBI while Mitch
Wells was 4-for-4 with three runs scored for the Blue Devils.
The Mount returns to action with a 6:05 p.m. game at Penn State
on Tuesday, April 12.
