MOUNT UPDATE: Mount
Update..The Mount won a pair of mid-week home games to
move to 9-12 on the season. Sam Nott's pinch-hit two-run drove
home the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the eighth in an 8-6 win
over UMBC on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Mount scored three times
in the bottom of the seventh to earn a 5-4 win over Navy in a game
that was shortened due to rain and snow. Zach Helman leads the
Mount with a .413 average while Andrew Caron is hitting .353 with a
team-high 18 RBI. On the mound, Max Brittenham is 1-2 with a 2.73
ERA in a team-high 33.0 innings of work.
ABOUT THE KNIGHTS: Fairleigh Dickinson enters the weekend
4-14 overall and 1-3 in the Northeast Conference. The Knights have
lost seven in a row singe opening NEC play with a 6-5 win over
Quinnipiac on March 18. Brian Dillon leads the Knights with a .384
average ahile Ryan Kresky is hitting .290 with a team-high 17 runs
scored. D.J. Robinson is hitting .279 with a team-high 19 RBI. On
the mound, Zach Kisling is 1-0 with a team-best 4.15 ERA in 10
relief appearances.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES vs. FDU...The Mount holds a
37-26 lead in the all-time series with FDU. The Knights, however,
won three of four from the Mount last season. The Mount is 17-7
against FDU since 2004. Mount St. Mary's has won the past nine
meetings between the two teams in Emmitsburg, Md., including
four-game sweeps in 2007 and 2009.
LAST YEAR'S SERIES WITH FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON:
Fairleigh Dickinson took three of four from the Mount in the
season-ending four-game series. The Knights took the first three
games of the series before the Mount rallied with 10 runs in the
top of the ninth to earn a 12-9 win in the final game of the
series. Trailing 9-2 in the top of the ninth in that game, Josh
Winter had five RBI in the ninth, including a three-run homer and a
go-ahead two-run single. FDU took the opener of the twinbill, 2-1,
despite being held to three hits by Costa Kapothanasis. Fairleigh
Dickinson swept a doubleheader to open the series, winning 6-5 and
12-8. In the 12-8 win, Ryan Kresky hit a walk-off grand slam to
lift the Knights to the win. In the opening game, D.J. Robinson
had a walk-off RBI single for FDU.
TRENDING UP: Mark Quaranta is 5-for-8 (.625)
at the plate over the past two games and is currently on a
seven-game hit streak... Senior right-hander Max Brittenham has a
1.80 ERA over his past five appearances...He is 1-2 with 18
strikeouts in 30.0 innings over that span...Brittenham has tossed
back-to-back complete games in his most recent appearances...Andrew
Caron is 7-for-10 (.700) over the past three games with four
RBI...Caron has a .769 on-base percentage in the three games...Kyle
Kane went 4-for-8 (.500) with a pair of doubles in the wins over
UMBC and Navy...Kane, a career .318 hitter, raised his average by
48 points to .211...Zach Helman is hitting .526 (20-for-38) over
his past 12 games...
CAREER NUMBERS: Mark Quaranta is eighth
all-time at the Mount with a .327 career average while Shane Eyler
is 13th with a .320 average...Andrew Caron is
9th all-time in career slugging percentage
(.510)...Eyler is sixth all-time with 104 runs scored with Kane in
11th with 93...Eyler has 182 career hits, good for
fourth all-time at the Mount...Kane is right behind in sixth place
with 169 career hits...Eyler's 23 career home runs are fourth
all-time at MSM while his 105 RBI are also fourth...Eyler is third
all-time with 279 total bases with Kane in eighth with 231...Tommy
Flynn is fourth all-time with 31 career stolen bases.
ON THE BASEPATHS: The Mount has been
aggressive on the base paths this season, averaging 2.43 steal
attempts per game this year. Last year, the Mount averaged 1.45
steal attempts per game. The Mount has 31 stolen bases in 21 games
this year after tallying 51 steals in 51 games all of last year.
Tommy Flynn leads the team with 10 steals while Brandon Scott is
second on the squad with seven.
HELMAN NAMED NEC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Zach
Helman was named the Northeast Conference's Player of the Week on
March 21. Helman hit .632 in helping the Mount to a 4-2 record
last week. The senior third baseman was 8-for-12 (.667) at the
plate in the Mount's four-game series at Wagner. He was 4-for-4 in
the Mount's 11-4 win in the third game against the Seahawks.
Helman was 4-for-7 in the Mount's doubleheader sweep of UMES
earlier in the week.
PRESEASON PICKS: The Mount was tabbed to finish
in sixth place in the annual Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches
Poll. Central Connecticut State was picked to finish first,
followed by Monmouth, Bryant, Wagner, Sacred Heart and the
Mount.
UP NEXT: Mount St. Mary's heads to Central
Connecticut State next weekend for a four-game NEC series,
beginning with a nine-inning game on Friday, April 8, at 3 pm.
