Box Score
Orlando, Fla. (March 8, 2011)-Mount St. Mary's
scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning to snap a
scoreless tie en route to a 2-1 victory at Central Florida on
Tuesday night.
Mount (2-3) starter Max Brittenham did not allow a run in 6.2
innings of work. He was in some trouble in the bottom of the fifth
when UCF had runners on second and third with one out. Brittenham,
however, got a strikeout and a fly out to get out of the jam.
In the bottom of the seventh, UCF had two runners on base with
two outs. Thomson summoned left-hander Karl Lamont out of the
bullpen to face pinch-hitter Derek Luciano, and Lamont came through
by striking out Luciano on three pitches.
The Mount offense was quiet for the first seven innings against
Central Florida starter Ray Hanson. However, the Mount rallied in
the eighth when the Knights went to the bullpen.
With the score tied at 0-0 in the top of the eighth inning, Zach
Helman and Brandon Scott posted back-to-back singles through the
right side to put runners on the corners with one out. The Knights
(9-3) brought in lefty Joe Rogers to face Tommy Flynn, but Mount
head coach Scott Thomson opted for right-handed pinch-hitter Nick
Walker.
After Scott stole second base to avoid the double play, Walker
came through with a clutch base hit with the infield in to put the
Mount ahead, 1-0. Michael Foster followed with a single to left
field to score Scott to give the Mount a two-run advantage.
Buddy Fields pitched the final two innings for the Mount to pick
up the save. Fields struck out a pair while allowing only a
two-out RBI groundout in the ninth.
The Mount concludes its five-game trip in Florida on Wednesday
against Bowling Green.
