Box Score
Winter Haven, Fla. (March 5,
2011)--The Mount St. Mary's baseball team opened its
Florida trip by rallying for a 3-2 victory over Miami (Ohio) in 10
innings on Saturday. The Mount improves to 1-1 on the year with
the victory.
Trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of
the ninth, the Mount scored a pair of runs to force extra innings.
Andrew
Caron started the rally with a double down the right field
line. After Kyle
Kane grounded out to short, moving Caron to third, Shane
Eyler singled to left to cut the deficit to 2-1. Jay Knight
pinch ran for Eyler and Mark
Quaranta promptly doubled through the right side to continue
the rally. Knight, however, was called out for missing second
base, leaving Quaranta on second with two outs. Sam
Nott pinch hit for the Mount, and came through with a clutch
double to even the score.
Freshman Michael Locondro pitched a
perfect top of the 10th, striking out a pair, to keep the score
even at 2-2. In the bottom of the 10th, freshman Brandon Scott led
off with a walk and moved to second on a Tommy
Flynn sacrifice bunt. Michael
Foster struck out and Caron was walked intentionally to put
runners on first and second with two outs. Miami (Ohio) pitcher
Matt Rosinski followed with a wild pitch in the dirt, and Scott was
able to score when the Redhawk catcher threw the ball into left
field trying to get Scott out at third.
Miami (Ohio) (3-4) had grabbed the lead
by scoring single runs in the top of the third and sixth
innings.
Starting pitcher Vincent
Molesky had a solid outing, allowing a pair of runs while
striking out five in seven innings of work. Karl
Lamont, Nick Riley, Colin
Stuver and Andrew
Schrock combined to hold Miami scoreless in the eighth and nine
innings ahead of Locondro, who picked up his first collegiate
victory in the game.
At the plate, Quaranta was 2-for-3 with a
double while Eyler went 2-for-4 at the plate in the victory.
The Mount plays Xavier on Monday.
