MOUNT UPDATE: The Mount lost all four games of
its four-game NEC home series against Quinnipiac this past
weekend. The Mount dropped a pair of doubleheaders in the series,
losing 7-4 and 4-1 on Friday and 3-2 and 7-2 on Saturday. The
Mount managed just nine runs while hitting .246 as a team over the
weekend. Andrew Caron led the way offensively, hitting .545
(6-for-11) in the series while Zach Helman hit .417 (5-for-12). On
the mound, Max Brittenham tossed his second consecutive complete
game in the Mount's 3-2 loss on Saturday. Brittenham allowed two
earned runs with six strikeouts in seven innings to take the
loss.
ABOUT THE RETRIEVERS: UMBC enters Tuesday's
game 3-11 on the season. The Retrievers have lost their final five
games in Florida last week, including four in a row to Dartmouth.
Max Himmelstein is hitting .327 with a home run and six RBI to pace
the Retrievers while Biran Klukowicz is hitting .326 with a
team-best 12 RBI. On the mound, reliever Sean Sweetnam is 1-0 with
a team-best 2.08 ERA in 13.0 innings of work while Austin Drewyer
is the top starter with a 1-3 record and a 4.45 ERA in 32.1 innings
of work.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES vs. UMBC...UMBC holds a
27-10 advantage in the all-time series against the Mount since the
move to NCAA Division I in 1989. The teams have split the past
four meetings with each squad winning at home over the past four
years. Last year, UMBC posted a 13-7 home victory over the Mount
on April 28. The Mount defeated the Retrievers, 7-3, on March 24,
2009, at Straw Family Stadium.
LAST YEAR'S MEETING WITH UMBC: UMBC scored 11
runs in the bottom of the first inning en route to a 13-7 win over
the Mount on April 28 last year. Max Himmelstein had a two-run
triple and Rick Phillips a two-run homer in the inning that saw 15
batters come to the plate. Michael Foster hit a three-run homer in
the second for the Mountaineers. UMBC recorded a triple-play in
the top of the third when Foster lined to shortstop Rich Conlon,
who stepped on the bag and threw to first to complete the play.
Andrew Caron was 3-for-4 at the plate for the Mount while Foster
was 2-for-4 with four RBI. Himmelstein went 3-for-5 with four RBI
in the win for UMBC.
ABOUT THE MIDSHIPMEN: Navy is 14-10-1 on the
year after winning three of four against Princeton at home over the
weekend. Alex Azor is hitting .381 with nine doubles and 20 RBI in
25 games played to lead the Navy offense. Dave Milanes is hitting
.337 with a team-high 25 RBI. On the mound, reliever Joel Rinehart
is 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA and three saves in 28.0 innings of work.
The top starter is Johnny Schoberl, who is 2-1 with a 5.14 ERA on
the season.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES vs. NAVY...Since moving to
NCAA Division I in 1989, the Mount is 4-2 all-time against Navy.
The Mountaineers have won the past two meetings, including a 6-3
win at Navy last year. The Mount defeated the Midshipmen, 10-7, at
home on Mar. 19, 2009.
LAST YEAR'S MEETING WITH NAVY: The Mount
defeated Navy, 6-3, on March 9 last year in Annapolis. The Mount
scored twice in each of the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead.
Shane Eyler had a two-run single in the first while Tom Healy added
a two-run single in the second. Andrew Caron walked with the bases
loaded in the fifth while Jacob Darr had an RBI single in the sixth
to stretch the lead to 6-0. Navy scored once in the seventh and
twice in the eighth to cut the deficit to 6-3. In the ninth, Karl
Lamont retired the final batter to earn the save. Vincent Molesky
allowed five hits with five strikeouts in seven innings to earn the
win. Tommy Flynn was 2-for-4 with two runs scored to pace the
Mount offense.
HELMAN NAMED NEC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Zach
Helman was named the Northeast Conference's Player of the Week on
March 21. Helman hit .632 in helping the Mount to a 4-2 record
last week. The senior third baseman was 8-for-12 (.667) at the
plate in the Mount's four-game series at Wagner. He was 4-for-4 in
the Mount's 11-4 win in the third game against the Seahawks.
Helman was 4-for-7 in the Mount's doubleheader sweep of UMES
earlier in the week.
TRENDING UP: Senior third baseman Zach Helman
is hitting .548 (17-for-31) at the plate with four doubles and 12
RBI over the past 10 games...Senior Andrew Caron is hitting .444
(16-for-36) with 11 RBI over the same 10-game stretch...Senior
right-hander Max Brittenham has a 1.80 ERA over his past five
appearances...He is 1-2 with 18 strikeouts in 30.0 innings over
that span...Brittenham has tossed back-to-back complete games in
his most recent appearances.
ON THE BASEPATHS: The Mount has been
aggressive on the base paths this season, averaging
2.53 steal attempts per game this year. Last
year, the Mount averaged 1.45 steals per game. The Mount has 29
stolen bases in 19 games this year after tallying 51 steals in 51
games all of last year. Tommy Flynn leads the team with nine
steals while Brandon Scott is second on the squad with seven.
PRESEASON PICKS: The Mount was tabbed to finish
in sixth place in the annual Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches
Poll. Central Connecticut State was picked to finish first,
followed by Monmouth, Bryant, Wagner, Sacred Heart and the
Mount.
