Emmitsburg, Md. (March 26, 2011)--The Mount St.
Mary's baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader to visiting
Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on
campus. The Bobcats held on for a 3-2 win in the first game before
recording a 7-2 victory in the nightcap. Quinnipiac swept all four
games of the Northeast Conference series.
In the opening game, the Mount (7-12, 2-6 NEC) took a 1-0 lead
in the bottom of the first behind the base-running of Tommy
Flynn. Flynn singled up the middle to lead off the frame.
With the hit-and-run on, Flynn moved to third on Nick
Walker's groundout to short. Flynn came home to score when
Quinnipiac first baseman Gabe Guerino's throw to third was off the
mark.
The Bobcats (11-6, 7-1 NEC) evened the score in the top of the
fourth when Joe Poletsky and Mike Bartlett had back-to-back singles
to put two runners on with one out. Kyle Nisson followed with an
RBI double to left center field off Mount starter Max
Brittenham, who avoided further damage in the inning by
retiring the final two batters on a groundout and a strikeout.
Quinnipiac took the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth.
Chris Migani walked and moved to second on a Poletsky sacrifice
bunt. After Brittenham struck out Bartlett, Nisson was
intentionally walked to put runners on first and second with two
outs. Zak Palmer followed with an RBI single to right-center field
to plate the go-ahead run. Quinnipiac got an insurance run on a
Mount error to stretch the lead to 3-1.

batters all singled. Mark
Quaranta started the rally with an infield hit before Andrew
Caron singled through the right side. Shane
Eyler's infield hit loaded the bases for Zach
Helman, who came through with a base hit to center to score
Quaranta to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Bobcats summoned reliever Andrew Rinaldi with the bases load
and no outs, and he was able to get the first out on Kyle
Kane's line drive back to the pitcher. He then induced a Michael
Foster double-play groundout to short to end the game.
Helman went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Mout in the loss while
Brittenham tossed a complete game, allowing three runs (two earned)
with six strikeouts in seven innings.
