Emmitsburg, Md. (March 25, 2011)--Mount St.
Mary's lost both games of a doubleheader to Quinnipiac on Friday
afternoon at Straw Family Stadium on campus. Quinnipiac took the
opening game, 7-4, before posting a 4-1 win in the nightcap.
The Bobcats (9-6, 5-1 NEC) took a 5-0 lead in the top of the
fourth inning of the opening game. After scoring an unearned run
in the top of the first, Quinnipiac scored four times in the
fourth. Gabe Guerino walked with the bases loaded and Mickey
Amanti had an RBI single to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead. Ben
Farina then followed with a two-run single to left field to stretch
the margin to five and chase Mount starter Vincent
Molesky.
Reliever Dan
Horner was able to avoid further damage in the inning, retiring
both batters he faced in the inning.
The Mount (7-10, 2-4 NEC) fought back with four runs in the
bottom of the fourth. With one out, Andrew
Caron walked and Mark
Quaranta hit a line drive homer to right field to cut the
deficit to 5-2. Kyle
Kane singled and Zach
Helman ripped a double to right-center field to cut the deficit
to 5-3. Helman moved to thrid on a wild pitch and then scored on
Josh
Winter's sacrifice fly.
Quinnipiac added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on a
Farina RBI infield single and Joe Poletsky's RBI groundout. From
there, reliever Andrew Rinaldi shut down the Mount, pitching three
scoreless innings to earn the save.
In the second game, Quinnipiac broke a scoreless tie with a pair
of runs in the top of the fourth inning. Mike Bartlett's
run-scoring single to right-center field plated Chris Migani with
the game's first run. Kyle Nisson added a sacrifice fly later in
the frame.
The Mount responded with a run in the bottom half of the

Walker was hit by a pitch, and Quaranta singled to center field
to load the bases with no outs off Quinnipiac pitcher Derek
Lamacchia. Caron grounded into a field's choice to score Flynn to
cut the deficit to 2-1. Lamacchia, however got Sam
Nott to hit into an inning-ending double-play to thwart the
rally.
The Bobcats added single runs in the fifth and the seventh to
seal the win. Lamacchia struck out four while allowing one run with
four strikeouts in the complete-game victory.
Michael Locondro had a strong start for the Mount in the loss,
allowing three runs (two earned) while allowing six hits in 5.2
innings. Colin
Stuver pitched 0.1 innings of scoreless relief while Nick Riley
gave up a run in one inning of work.
The Mount offense managed just 10 hits combined in the two
games. Flynn was 2-for-6 with two stolen bases in the two games
while Quaranta was 2-for-7 with two RBI.
The teams conclude the four-game series with a noon doubleheader
at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus. The first game will be
seven innings with the second a nine-inning contest.
Game Notes: The doubleheader was the Mount's
home opener this season...The Mountaineers opened the year by
playing the first 15 games on the road...Brandon
Scott had three stolen bases on the day...Quinnipiac holds a
22-18 lead in the all-time series.
