Brittenham Tosses Complete Game in 6-3 Win at Wagner

New York, N.Y. (March 20, 2011)-Mount St. Mary's defeated Wagner, 6-3, on Sunday afternoon in Northeast Conference action at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. With the win, the Mount split its four-game series with the Seahawks to open NEC play.

Max Brittenham tossed a complete game, allowing three runs while striking out a pair to move to 1-1 on the season.

Mount St. Mary's (7-8, 2-2 NEC) scored five times in the top of the third inning to take the lead. Josh Winter started the rally with a triple, and then scored the game's first run on a Michael Foster sacrifice fly. Brandon Scott followed with a single. Scott stole second base, Tommy Flynn had an infield single and Nick Walker's single drove in Scott for a 2-0 advantage.

A passed ball put the runners on second and third for Shane Eyler, who came through with a two-run base hit. Andrew Caron singled and Kyle Kane walked to load the bases for Zach Helman, who lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Eyler to push the lead to 5-0.

Jack Rice hit an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth to get Wagner (3-12, 2-2 NEC) on the scoreboard while Gaby Ramirez's RBI single in the sixth cut the Mount lead to 5-2.

The Mount added to the lead in the seventh when Eyler walked to open the frame. After a pair of strikeouts, pinch runner Buddy Fields stole second. Helman then came through with a single up the middle for a 6-2 margin.

Wagner answered in the bottom of the seventh on a Tommy Higgins RBI single. The Seahawks had runners on first and second with two outs, but Brittenham was able to get out of the jam by retiring Joe Conforti on a fly out.

Helman, Winter, Scott, Foster and Flynn each had two hits in the win for the Mountaineers. Helman went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI in the game and was 8-for-12 at the plate in the four-game series. The Mount had five stolen bases in the game.

The Mount returns to action on Wednesday, March 23, with a 3:00 p.m. game at Bucknell.
