Staten Island, N.Y. (March 19, 2011)-Mount St.
Mary's split a doubleheader at Wagner on Saturday afternoon in
Northeast Conference action at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
Wagner took the opener, 8-5, with the Mount rebounding to grab an
11-4 win in the second game.
The Mount jumped to an 8-0 lead after four innings to cruise to
the 11-4 victory in the second game of the twinbill.
The Mount scratched two runs across in the top of the second to
take a 2-0 lead. With two outs and runners on second and third, Zach
Helman laced a double down the left field line to plate a pair
of runs.
The Mount (6-8, 1-2 NEC) broke the game open with four runs in
the top of the third inning. With one out, Nick
Walker doubled and scored on an Andrew
Caron single through the right side. Shane
Eyler followed with an RBI base hit and Sam
Nott added a sacrifice fly. Helman's RBI single later in the
inning gave the Mount a 6-0 advantage.
The Mount added a run on a Wagner error and an Eyler RBI single
in the fourth to extend the lead to 8-0. Wagner was able to cut
the margin to 8-3 with a run in the fifth and two more in the
sixth. Nick Riley, however, came on in relief of starter Michael
Locondro to get out of the sixth and earn a save.
The Mount sealed the win with three runs in the top of the
seventh on two errors and a Josh
Winter RBI single.
Helman went 4-for-4 at the plate in the second game with two
doubles and three RBI to lead the Mountaineers. Helman is now
6-for-9 through the first three games of the four-game series.
Eyler was 2-for-3 with two RBI while Walker was 1-for-3 with three
runs scored.
Locondro earned the win to improve to 2-1 on the season. He
allowed three runs in 5.1 innings while striking out four. Riley
allowed one run in 1.2 innings to earn the save.
In the opening game, Wagner took an early 4-0 lead by scoring a
pair of runs in each of the first two innings. Jon Lucas and Tommy
Higgins had RBI singles for the Seahawks in the first while Eddie
Brown had an RBI groundout and Seth Boyd an RBI single in the
second.
The Mount got back into the game with two runs in the top of the
fourth. Caron reached on an error and then scored when Kyle
Kane also reached on an error. Helman then drove home Kane
with a single to make the score 4-2.
Wagner, however, scored three times in the bottom half of the
inning to push the lead to 7-2. Gaby Sanchez and Jack Rice each
singled to open the frame. Rice moved to second on the throw to
put runners at second and third with no outs. Ian Vazquez followed
with an RBI groundout and Brown had an RBI single to the pitcher
for a 6-2 lead. Kevin McDonnell's infield single plated Brown for
the final run of the inning.
Mount St. Mary's responded with three runs in the fifth inning.
Tommy
Flynn walked and was forced out at second on a Michael
Foster grounder. Nott then singled, advancing to second on the
throw. Caron's two-run base hit cut the Wagner lead to 7-4. Eyler
added an RBI double to make the score 7-5.
Wagner, however, got an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth
on a McDonnell sacrifice fly to complete the scoring in the 8-5
win.
Caron went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI to pace the
Mount in the opening game. Brett
Moore started, allowing seven runs in 3.1 innings to take the
loss. Colin
Stuver allowed one run in 2.1 innings of relief.
Brown was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI for Wagner
while McDonnell added two hits and two RBI as well. Dale Hering
allowed five runs (three earned) in 4.1 innings to pick up the
win.
The four-game series concludes tomorrow with a single game at
1:00 p.m.
