Baseball Lets Late Leads Slip Away in 9-8 Extra-Inning Loss to Wagner

Staten Island, N.Y. (March 18, 2011)-Mount St. Mary's saw two late leads slip away in a 9-8 extra-inning loss at Wagner on Friday afternoon at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The game was the Northeast Conference opener for both teams.

After seeing Wagner rally from a 7-4 deficit to force extra innings, the Mount took the lead in the top half of the 10th inning. Pinch hitter Nick Walker opened the frame with a base hit and moved to second on a Brandon Scott sacrifice bunt. Tommy Flynn then came through with a clutch single up the middle to give the Mount an 8-7 lead.

Wagner, however, scored twice in the bottom of the tenth to earn the win. Joe Conforti was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a groundout. Gaby Sanchez singled to tie the game and moved to third on a Jack Rice base hit. Ian Vazquez laid down a squeeze bunt to score Ramirez with the winning run.

The Mount (5-7, 0-1 NEC) opened the scoring in the top of the first when Tommy Flynn singled, moved to second on a ground, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a Nott fielder's choice.

Ian Miller opened the bottom of the first for Wagner (2-10, 1-0 NEC) with a double and came around to score on a Kevin McDonnell two-base hit. The Seahawks took the lead when Tommy Higgins scored on a double-play in the bottom of the second.

Mount St. Mary's answered with three runs in the top of the third to take a 4-2 advantage. Brandon Scott singled to open the frame and moved to third on a Flynn base hit. Foster's RBI single plated Scott to tie the game at 2-2. Caron followed with a base hit to load the bases, and Nott and Eyler recorded back-to-back sacrifice flies to give the Mount a two-run lead.

Wagner answered with a run in the third on a Jon Lucas sacrifice fly and evened the score in the fourth when Higgins scored on an Ian Vazquez two-out single.

Mount St. Mary's regained the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Kane walked and moved to second on a Helman sacrifice bunt. Scott followed with a single to right-center field to give the Mount the lead. After Scott stole second, Flynn doubled him home to make the score 6-4. Chris Rautenstrauch came on in relief of starter Mark Holmes, and Flynn promptly stole third base and then scored on a wild pitch.

Miller and Seth Boyd had RBI singles in the seventh to cut the Mount lead to 7-6 while Higgins tied the game in the eighth with an RBI double.

Flynn paced the Mount offense, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. Flynn has scored eight runs over the past two games for the Mountaineers. Scott went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored while Foster and Caron each had two hits in the loss. Vincent Molesky allowed six runs in 7.1 innings in the start for the Mountaineers.

Miller, Higgins and Vazquez each had three hits for Wagner in the victory.

The teams will continue the four-game series tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.

Game Notes: Wagner holds a 37-28 lead in the all-time series...Mount St. Mary's has won 13 of the past 21 meetings between the two schools.
