Princess Anne, Md. (March 15, 2011)-
The Mount St. Mary's baseball team swept a doubleheader at
Maryland-Eastern Shore on Tuesday afternoon. The Mount rallied for
an 8-7 win in 10 innings in the opener before posting a 15-4
victory in the nightcap.

Quaranta provided the heroics in the opening game, tying the
game with an RBI double in the eighth and knocking in the winning
run with a double in the top of the 10th inning.
Quaranta finished the game 4-for-6 at the plate with two doubles
and two RBI for the Mount (5-6).
Trailing 7-6 in the top of the eighth, Sam
Nott and Andrew
Caron had back-to-back walks to open the inning. After Shane
Eyler flew out, Quaranta doubled to left to plate Nott with the
tying run. Caron was thrown out at home on the play trying to
score the go-ahead run.
In the top of the 10th, Eyler singled with two outs
and scored when Quaranta ripped a shot to right-center field to
plate Eyler with the winning run.
Dan
Horner picked up the win, tossing 5.1 innings of scoreless
relief, allowing just two hits with four strikeouts. Andrew
Schrock was the starter, allowing seven runs in 4.2
innings.
Caron was 2-for-4 with three RBI while Tommy
Flynn and Eyler added two hits each in the win.
UMES (1-14) scored single runs in each of the first two innings
to take a 2-0 advantage. The Mount rallied for three runs in the
top of the third to take the lead. Tony
Quaranta singled to open the frame. After a Flynn fielder's
choice, Foster walked to put two runners on for Nott, who singled
up the middle to cut the deficit to 2-1. Caron followed with a
double to plate Flynn and Nott to give the Mountaineers the
lead.
UMES tied the game in the bottom of the third on a James Newsome
sacrifice fly, but Schrock got out of a bases-loaded jam to avoid
further damage.
The Mount regained the lead with three runs in the top of the
fourth inning. Winter walked and scored on a Zach
Helman triple for a 4-3 lead. Michael
Foster chipped in an RBI single and Caron a sacrifice fly to
push the lead to 6-3.
The Hawks scored four times in the bottom of the fifth to take
the lead. Franklin Armstrong had a two-run single to make it a
one-run game before Trevon Johnson's two-run double gave UMES the
lead, 7-6.
The Mountaineers wasted little time taking control in the second
game, scoring eight runs in the top of the first en route to a 15-4
win.
Foster was 5-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI
to pace the Mountaineers while Flynn was 3-for-5 with five runs
scored and a pair of RBI. Helman added a 3-for-4 game with three
RBI while Mark
Quaranta, Caron and Tom
Healy each had a pair of hits in the victory.
On the mound, Karl
Lamont allowed one run in five innings of work to pick up the
victory.
Helman had a two-run single and Flynn a two-run double to
highlight the Mount's eight-run first inning. The Mountaineers
sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning, tallying six hits.
Mark
Quaranta and Caron added RBI singles in the third to push the
Mount's advantage to 10-1. Quaranta added an RBI double in the
fourth and Helman an RBI two-base hit in the fifth to extend the
lead to 12-1. After UMES scored three in the bottom of the sixth,
the Mount rounded out the game by scoring three times in the top of
the seventh. Foster had a two-run single in the seventh to
complete his 5-for-5 game.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday with a 3:00 p.m.
game at Wagner. It is the first of a four-game series that opens
Northeast Conference play.
