Baseball Edged by Saint Joseph's, 3-2

Camden, N.J. (March 13, 2011)--Mount St. Mary's lost at Saint Joseph's, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at Campbell's Field. The Mount's Michael Foster went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the loss.

Mount St. Mary's starter Max Brittenham allowed three runs (one earned) in 6.1 innings of work to take the loss. Brittenham allowed seven hits while striking out five in the game. Four relievers combined to pitch the final 1.2 innings for the Mount.

Saint Joseph's starter A.J. Holland held the Mount to four hits in seven innings of work to pick up the victory. Holland struck out eight batters in the game. Daniel Thorpe pitched the eighth and Brett Koliani picked up the save with a scoreless ninth.

With two outs in the bottom of the second, Mike Plakis reached on an error and Joe Cook doubled to put runners on second and third. Quinn Renner came through with a two-run double to give the Hawks (6-10) at 2-0 lead.

The Mount (3-6) evened the score with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. Mark Quaranta reached on an error and Kyle Kane followed with a walk. After both runners moved up on a wild pitch, Foster singled through the left side to even the score at 2-2.

Saint Joseph's got the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out rally. After Brittenham retired the first two batters of the inning, Greg Kumpel walked and moved to second on a Greg Taylor base hit. Drew Stoll followed with a single to center field to plate Kumpel with the go-ahead run.

The Mount's Eyler singled to lead off the seventh, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a groundout, but was stranded when Holland retired Foster with a grounder to the pitcher.

The Mount returns to action on Tuesday, March 15, with a doubleheader at Maryland-Eastern Shore.
