Molesky pitched seven strong innings to lead Mount St. Mary's past
Villanova, 5-1, on Friday afternoon.
Molesky allowed one run while striking out five in his second
consecutive quality start to open the season for the Mount (3-4).
Reliever Karl Lamont pitched two scoreless innings to close out the
win, picking up his first save of the season.
Tommy Flynn went 3-for-5 with a go-ahead two-run single to pace
the Mount offense. Brandon Scott added two hits and two runs
scored while Mark Quaranta also had a pair of hits. Sam Nott
continued his torrid start to the season, going 2-for-5 at the
plate. Nott is now hitting a team-best .500 through the first
seven games of the year.
Villanova (4-8) took a 1-0 lead on a Matt Fleishman RBI infield
single in the bottom of the first inning. The Wildcats then loaded
the bases with two outs, but Molesky escaped the jam when he struck
out Jordan Zech to end the inning.
The Mountaineers took the lead with a pair of runs in the top
half of the third inning. Zach Helman walked and Scott followed
with a bunt single to put runners on first and second with no
outs. The runners moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch and Flynn came
through with a single to right field to score Helman and Scott for
a 2-1 Mount lead.
Mount St. Mary's added to the lead in the top of the fifth.
Flynn singled with one out, moved to second on a failed pickoff
attempt, and then scored on a Michael Foster base hit for a 3-1
lead.
The Mount provided insurance with single runs in the eighth and
the ninth to seal the win. In the eighth, Nott doubles, moved to
third on an Andrew Caron base hit and scored on Eyler's single. In
the ninth, Scott and Flynn posted back-to-back singles and Scott
eventually scored on a Villanova error.
The Mount returns to action at Temple with a 1:00 p.m. game
tomorrow.
