Men's Soccer Upends Robert Morris 1-0 To Keep Postseason Hopes Alive

Box Score

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Zoncher Dennis (Swarthmore, Pa./Swarthmore) scored in the ninth minute to lead the Mount St. Mary's men's soccer team to a 1-0 win against Robert Morris in Northeast Conference (NEC) men's soccer action on Sunday.  With the win, the Mount (8-6-2, 5-3-1 NEC) remains in the hunt for a NEC postseason berth and sets up a pivotal regular season finale at Monmouth on Nov. 6.

Dennis notched his team and NEC-leading 11th goal of the season on a header off an assist from Ian Hendrie (Potomac, Md./St. Andrews Episcopal School) at the 8:06 mark. It was the senior's team-leading seventh assist of the season.

Peter Steve (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) made a career-high eight saves in the game to earn his second-straight shutout and fifth of the season.

"It was a great conference win today in adverse conditions against a solid team," said head coach Rob Ryerson. "Our keeper Peter Steve was outstanding and earned a much deserved shutout. We look forward to playing our last regular season game at Monmouth next weekend."

Toba Bolaji made six saves for the Colonials (4-11-1, 0-9-0 NEC) in the loss.

Mount St. Mary's posted a goal in the first 12 minutes of the game for the eighth time this season and improved to 8-0-0 in those contests after Dennis found the twine off a Hendrie assist for a 1-0 lead and Mount St. Mary's held on for the victory.

Robert Morris outshot the Mount 15-12 on the day, including nine shots that were turned away by Steve and the Mountaineers defense.

The Colonials had a bunch of chances in the seventh minute. Derek Stein had a blast from 10-yards out knocked out of bounds by a Mount St. Mary's defender. On the ensuing corner kick, Tyler Gardner had the advantage on Steve, but the Mount defense cleared the ball and then Shane Beharry point-blank shot on a loose ball was stopped by Steve.

In the 40th minute, Luca Campos had a shot heading toward the right post that Steve got a hand on to steer it wide of the post. Steve then came up big to start the second half when he turned away Beharry's shot to preserve the shutout.

Mount St. Mary's, who now has 16 points, will conclude the day in third place in the league standings. Monmouth (18) and Fairleigh Dickinson (17) are ahead of the Mount. Central Connecticut State (15 points), Sacred Heart (14 points), St. Francis (N.Y.) (13 points), Saint Francis (Pa.) (13 points) and Quinnipiac (12 points) all remain in the hunt for one of the four spots in the upcoming NEC Tournament.

Mount St. Mary's will conclude the season at Monmouth on Sunday. Match time is 1 p.m. The two teams have battled to ties in two of the last three matchups, including a 2-all result last season in Emmitsburg.
