Box Score Smithfield, R.I. (October 28, 2011)—A late rally came up short as Mount St. Mary's lost a key Northeast Conference women's soccer matchup at Bryant, 2-1, on Friday afternoon.
Trailing 2-0 midway through the second half, the Mount finally broke through on Sadie Winship's team-leading fifth goal of the year. Ragan Cote came up with a Bryant turnover and dropped the ball to Winship, who notched her 14th career goal.
Winship moves into fifth all-time at the Mount with 34 career points and is now sixth with 14 career goals.
The Mount kept pressing for the equalizing goal and had its best chance to score in the 77th minute when Alicia Mirando had her shot stopped by Bryant keeper Lauren Viverito. Cote corralled the rebound, but her shot was then blocked.
Kaitlyn Hinck notched the first goal of the game, shooting to the right side of the goal after receiving an Alex Bengston serve from 25 yards out in the 38th minute. The Bulldogs (8-7-3, 4-4-1 NEC) outshot the Mount, 10-3, in the opening half.
Danielle Scheuer collected a loose ball at the top of the box in the 49th minute and scored on a shot that went off the post and into the net to make it a 2-0 Bryant lead.
The Mount had a great chance to score in the 60th minute, but Ragan Cote's shot went off the post.
Bryant held a 19-to-12 advantage in shots in the game and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Mount keeper Alicia Miller had four saves while Viverito had four stops for the Bulldogs.
The Mount (6-9-2, 4-5-0 NEC) entered the game tied for fifth place in the Northeast Conference standings with the top four advancing to the NEC Tournament.
Mount St. Mary's closes out the regular season at Sacred Heart at noon on Sunday.
