Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (October 23, 2011)--Mount St. Mary's erupted for a season-high four goals in a 4-1 victory over Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium. Freshman Alicia Mirando (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) paced the Mount with a pair of goals in the victory.
Playing their final home game of the year, the Mount stayed in playoff contention with the convincing victory. Junior Kelly Baker (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) opened the scoring in the 36th minute. Junior Andrea Bujacich (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) started the play with a ball to the middle of the field. Sadie Winship (York, Pa./Eastern York) was able to flick the ball to send Baker in on a breakaway.
Mount St. Mary's (6-8-2, 4-4-0 NEC) added to the lead in the 53rd minute on a Jackie Corley (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara) score. Corley stole the ball at the top of the penalty box, made a nice move, and finished to the bottom right corner for her second goal of the year.
The Bobcats (4-9-1, 3-5-0 NEC) did not go away, finally breaking through in the 73rd minute to cut the Mount advantage to one. Kyla Miles took a free kick from near midfield and sent the ball into the box that found Kristina Del Mistro from about six yards out. Del Mistro was able to finish the play to cut the Mount lead to 2-1.
Mirando then took over, scored a pair of goals in a span of 1:36 to seal the victory. On the first play, the freshman collected the ball at the top right of the penalty box, made a move to beat the defender, and finished the shot to the inside left of the goal.
Mirando's second goal came just 1:36 later when she took a cross from Ragan Cote and buried the shot to give the Mount the 4-1 lead with just under eight minutes left in the contest.
Mount St. Mary's held a 17-10 advantage in shots in the game, including a 9-to-4 margin in the first half. Goalkeeper Alicia Miller made three saves to earn the win while Jill Kelley made four saves for the Bobcats.
The four goals were the most by a Mount team since a 5-2 victory over New Jersey Tech on September 17, 2008. The four goals also doubled the Mount's goal total in home games this year. The Mountaineers had scored just two goals over its first eight home games prior to today's outburst.
