Box Score SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Jimmy Ockford (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) posted a goal and an assist to lift Mount St. Mary's past Bryant 3-1 in Northeast Conference (NEC) men's soccer action on Sunday.
Jimmy Ockford helped give the Mount (6-6-1, 3-3-0 NEC) an early 1-0 lead in the fourth minute when he assisted his brother Alex Ockford (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) along with Kyle Patrick (Hershey, Pa./Hershey). The sophomore then helped seal the victory with a score in the 69th minute. Jimmy Ockford, who came into the season with no goals and one assist for one point, ranks fourth on the squad with two goals and three assists for seven points.
Freshman Zoncher Dennis (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season while Patrick, Matthew Steele (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) and Chris Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) each recorded an assist on an Ockford score. Peter Steve (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) made six saves in the winning effort.
"Glad we were able to bounce back today and get the winning result," said head coach Rob Ryerson. "This was a good team effort with all players contributing to the win."
Nicholas Alberti scored off a Joseph Dimauro assist for the Bulldogs (1-10-1, 0-6-0 NEC) and Chris Bronski made four saves in the loss.
Mount St. Mary's jumped out to the early lead and never looked back to down Bryant for the third-straight year and notch its first road win of the season.
The Mount scored off a corner kick serve from Patrick, who found the tandem of Jimmy Ockford to Alex Ockford for the elder Ockford's second tally of the season at 3:04 for the early 1-0 edge.
Dennis increased the Mountaineers lead to 2-0 when he found the twine at 28:33 off a pass from Steele. Jimmy Ockford then sealed the victory when he scored off a pass from Wheeler at 68:27.
Bryant scored with 44 seconds left to end the shutout when Alberti scored off a Dimauro assist, but the Bulldogs could get no closer the rest of the way.
Wheeler became the Mount's Division I leader in points with 81 on the day and moved into third place on the all-time list. The senior tied Mark Southern's (80, 1994-97) Division I mark for points against Long Island on Oct. 9 and then established a new mark against Bryant.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Sunday at home against Quinnipiac. Match time is 3 p.m.
