Washington, D.C. (September 5, 2010)-The Mount
St. Mary's women's soccer team was edged, 1-0, in overtime at
George Washington on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the
Mountaineers fall to 1-2-1 on the season.
George Washington scored the game-winning goal as Cara Cadigan
took a tap pass from Melanie Keer 2:50 into the overtime, evaded
diving Mount goalkeeper Alicia Miller (Lititz,
Pa./Warwick), and put home the game-winner.
The Mount had several outstanding scoring chances in the game
and had a pair of goals called back in regulation due to
offsides.
In the second half, Mount St. Mary's carried play throughout,
outshooting the Colonials 5-to-1, with George Washington goalkeeper
Bridget Mahon having to make four saves.
Sadie Winship (York, Pa./Eastern York) had the
Mount's first shot on goal in the second half, but she was denied
on a save from Mahon in the 54th minute. Winship was
denied on a second opportunity just five minutes later.
Winship had her third shot on goal of the second half denied by
Mahon with seven minutes left in regulation while Miller made a
stop on a header by George Washington's Sierra Smidinger just 49
seconds later.
The Mount put the pressure on late in the second half, earning
back-to-back corner kicks in the 87th minute with
Kelly Baker (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) having
a shot stopped by Mahon with 3:08 left in the second half.
The first half was uneventful as neither team was able to get on
the scoreboard. Miller had a pair of saves for the Mount while
George Washington held a 4-to-2 advantage in shots.
Miller made three saves for the Mount in the loss while Winship
had three shots and graduate student Kaylyn Mahon (Spring
Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) recording two. Mahon made four
saves in the game for George Washington.
Shots in the game were even at 7-7 while the Mount held a 6-to-1
advantage in corner kicks in the game.
It is the Mount's second 1-0 loss this season. The Mount opened
the year with a 1-0 loss at Navy with the winning goal coming in
85th minute.
The Mount returns to action on Tuesday, September 7, when Towson
visits Waldron Family Stadium on campus for a 7:00 p.m. game.
