LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Cal State Bakersfield scored three times in
the final 25 minutes and 24 seconds to rally past Mount St. Mary's
3-2 in overtime of a non-conference men's soccer match on
Sunday.
Junior Chris Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier)
notched his eighth goal of the season for the Mount (3-5) while
Will Thomas (Mount Rainer, Md./The Heights) posted his second tally
of the year and Peter Steve (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) recorded four
saves in the loss.
Jesus Sanchez scored the final two goals for the Roadrunners
(5-2) and Keeyan Ghazanfarpour dished out two assists including the
game-tying goal in the winning effort.
Cal State Bakersfield scored twice in the final 19 minutes and
three seconds of regulation and then registered the decisive score
six minutes and 21 seconds into overtime to earn the victory in the
first-ever meeting against Mount St. Mary's.
The Roadrunners comeback started when Robbie Gouk tapped in a
rebound from a Ghanzanfarpour shot off the crossbar at 70:57 to
trim the margin to 2-1. Ghanzanfarpour helped Cal State Bakersfield
even the match when he found Sanchez with two minutes and 29
seconds left in regulation.
Sanchez then gave the Roadrunners the win when he found the
twine on the far post off a corner kick serve from Ernesto Hinojosa
at the 96:21 mark.
Mount St. Mary's scored a goal in the first half and then
increased the advantage early in the second stanza to grab a 2-0
lead. Thomas gave the Mount the edge when he knocked in his shot
from 15-yards out on a loose ball after a corner kick at 36:06.
Wheeler then converted a penalty kick at 57:05 to increase the
margin to 2-0, but Cal State Bakersfield scored the final three
markers to come away with the victory.
After Wheeler knocked in his penalty kick, the Mount only
managed two shots the rest of the match. Wheeler had his shot saved
by Shannon at 64:38 and freshman Connor Waraksa (Media, Pa./Strath
Haven) missed high at 73:07 for the Mountaineers' final scoring
chance.
Mount St. Mary's led the battle of corner kicks 9-1, but only
had three after Wheeler's eighth goal including a corner in
overtime.
Wheeler moved into ninth place on the program's all-time career
points list with 60 points.
The Mount returns to action on Friday when the squad opens up
Northeast Conference play at Central Connecticut State. Game time
is 8 p.m.
