Box Score
EMMITSBURG, Md. - UMBC scored three goals in the second half to
rally past Mount St. Mary's 3-2 in non-conference men's soccer
action on Saturday.
Ty Fenstermacher (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) posted his first goal of
the season and fourth of his career while the Mount (3-3) notched
its second goal on an own goal. Peter Steve (Dallas, Pa./Dallas)
made his collegiate debut in goal and registered two saves.
Pete Caringi, Jr., the son of head coach Pete Caringi, scored
the game-winning goal in the 78th minute while Andrew Bulls dished
out two assists. Levi Houapeau and Chris Williams also scored for
the Retrievers and Dan Louisignau played the second half in between
the pipes and made a game-saving stop in the closing seconds to
preserve the win.
For the second-straight year, UMBC rallied from a first-half
deficit to score three times in the second half to come away with a
3-2 win and extend its unbeaten streak to 13 games against the
Mountaineers.
Trailing 2-0 going into the final stanza, the Retrievers tied
the game on a pair of set offensive plays on free kicks. Bulls
served a free kick from the left side to Dustin Dzwonkski who found
Williams head and into the back of the twine at 52:14 to trim the
margin to one goal.
The score stayed that way for the next 10 minutes before another
free kick helped tie the game. Houapeu and another UMBC player
stood in front of the Mount St. Mary's wall. Houapeu then moved
behind the wall to take the soft pass from Bulls and scored to knot
the game at 2 at the 62:26 mark.
Milo Kapor then set up the decisive goal with a serve from the
right side where Caringi backwards kicked the ball into the twine
at 77:21.
The Mount had a great chance to even the match in the closing
minute of the contest. Senior Eric Detzel (York, Pa./Central York)
had a shot right at the top right of the penalty box saved by
Louisignau in the bottom right of the pipe with five seconds left.
The ball went out of bounds, but the Mountaineers did not have time
for a corner kick as time expired.
Mount St. Mary's took a 2-0 lead in the first half. A long ball
from Chris Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) ended
up with a scramble for the ball. A Retriever defender knocked the
ball to Fenstermacher, who nailed his shot from left to right into
the back netting at 33:31 for a 1-0 edge.
The Mount increased the lead to two goals with a little help
from UMBC. Senior Scott Phinith (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) hit a
corner kick serve from the right when the Retrievers netminder Phil
Saunders knocked the ball up in the air before having his momentum
and the ball go backwards and past the line for an own goal at
39:35. Saunders made two saves in the first 45 minutes of the
match. UMBC then scored three times in the second stanza to win the
inter-state battle.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday when the squad
travels to participate in the UNLV Tournament. The Mount will take
on the host Rebels on Friday at 10 p.m. EST in a battle of the
Ryerson brothers. The Mountaineers head coach Rob Ryerson, UNLV's
all-time leading scorer, will face his younger brother, Rich, who
is in his first season as the helm of the Rebels.
