Women's Soccer Ties NJIT, 1-1

Box Score

Emmitsburg, Md. (September 12, 2010)--Sophomore Kelly Baker (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) scored with 7:04 remaining in regulation to lift Mount St. Mary's to a 1-1 tie with NJIT on Sunday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium.

Trailing 1-0 late in the second half, freshman Ragan Cote (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) played a ball at midfield to break Baker alone for a one-on-one chance. Baker was able to finish with a shot to the bottom left corner to even the score at 1-1.

The Mount (2-3-2) had several one-on-one scoring chances in the second half as NJIT was playing an offsides trap. Sadie Winship (York, Pa./Eastern York) hit the post while Baker was denied by NJIT goalkeeper Sadie Mele on another scoring opportunity.

Neither team had a shot on goal in the overtime periods with the Mount having the best chance. Cote was able to break free down the left side of field toward the goal, but Sele challenged on the play and take the ball away at the top of the penalty box when it got a little ahead of Cote.

The Highlanders (1-4-1) took the lead in the 20th minute when Amanda Dotten lofted a ball past Mount keeper Alicia Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) for a 1-0 lead. Dotten received a pass from Piper Lunan at top left on the penalty box, where she was able to connect for the goal.

NJIT's offsides trap was effective as the Mount was called for offsides 15 times in the game. The Mount held a 22-to-10 advantage in shots, including a 5-to-1 margin in the overtime periods.

Miller made fives saves in the game for the Mount, which remained unbeaten at home this year (2-0-2). Sele made eight saves in the game for the Highlanders.

The Mount is next in action on Wednesday, Sept. 22, at Bucknell.
