EMMITSBURG, Md. - Mike Matta (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) singled
home the game-winning run in the 10th inning to lift Mount St.
Mary's past Central Connecticut State 14-13 in the final game of a
four-game series in Northeast Conference (NEC) baseball action on
Sunday.
With two outs in the 10th inning, Michael Foster (Easton,
Md./Easton) and Tony Quaranta (Virginia Beach, Va./Loyola
Blakefield) each walked to bring up Matta. The senior sent the 1-1
pitch through the hole on the left side into left field. With
Foster making the turn around third, the Blue Devils' left fielder
Tyler Casserta picked up the base hit and threw the ball toward the
plate for what looked like a bang-bang play at home, but his throw
went up the first base line and Foster slide home safely to help
the Mountaineers split the four-game series.
Matta pitched the final five innings of the game to improve to
4-4 on the year. The senior also went 3-for-7 at the dish with two
RBIs and a run scored on senior day. Foster went 3-for-5 with three
RBIs and three runs scored while Tony Quaranta added two hits and
an RBI.
Shane Eyler (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) paced the Mount
(19-28, 13-15 NEC) with a 5-for-6 performance with three RBIs and
two runs scored while Jake Darr (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas
Johnson) added a 4-for-5 afternoon with a homer, three runs scored
and one RBI in his final game at E.T. Straw Family Stadium.
Anthony Scaildone went 4-for-6 with four RBIs and two runs
scored for Central Connecticut State (23-18, 12-12 NEC) while Pat
Epps also went 4-for-6 with four RBIs and a run scored in the
loss.
The game was a seesaw battle, but despite the Blue Devils
scoring five times in the final three innings Mount St. Mary's
concluded its home schedule with a victory in dramatic fashion.
After the Mount scored seven times in the sixth to take a 13-8
lead, Central Connecticut State chipped away at themargin over the
next three stanzas. Kyle Zarotney singled home a run in the
seventh, Sean Allaire smacked his fifth homer of the series, a
two-run shot, in the eighth and Sacaildone tied the game with a
two-run single in the ninth.
In the bottom of the ninth with two outs, Darr singled to right
center and Kyle Kane (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) walked, but the
Blue Devils got out of the jam with a fly out to left. Matta then
got Central Connecticut State out 1-2-3 in the top of the 10th to
allow the senior to help his own cause with his decisive two-out
run-scoring single.
In a game that saw the two teams combine for 27 runs and 44 base
hits, the Blue Devils struck first two with runs in the second on a
Mitch Wells solo homer and a Danny Hickey sacrifice fly.
The Mountaineers answered right back in the bottom of the inning
to tie the game thanks to a Mark Quaranta (Virginia Beach,
Va./Loyola Blakefield) RBI single to right center to plate Eyler
before the freshman scored on an error.
Central Connecticut State regained a two-run advantage in the
third on a Scaildone two-run shot down the right field line for a
4-2 edge.
Darr clawed away at the deficit with an opposite field solo
homer in the bottom of the third before Mount St. Mary's grabbed a
5-4 lead with two runs in the fourth. Foster doubled down the left
field line to score Mark Quaranta before Mark's brother Tony
brought home Foster with a single down the left field line.
Epps answered for the Blue Devils with a grand slam in the fifth
to give Central Connecticut State an 8-5 lead.
The Mount scored a run in the bottom of the fifth on an Eyler
run-scoring single to center before the squad exploded for seven
runs in the sixth. Matta started the offensive outburst with an
RBI double down the left field line before Tom Healy (Harrisburg,
Pa./Central Dauphin) and Kane each brought home a run on a single
to give the Mountaineers a 9-8 edge. Eyler and Foster then capped
the stanza by each hitting a two-run double for a 13-8
advantage.
The Blue Devils came back to tie it by scoring the next five
runs to set up Matta's extra-inning heroics in the 10th inning.
Prior to the game, Mount St. Mary's honored seniors Darr, Matta,
Costa Kapothanasis (Westbrook, Maine/Cherverus) and Kent
Worthington (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown). Kapothanasis
pitched the first five innings of the game on Sunday while
Worthington got the win in the opener.
Mount St. Mary's travels to Fairleigh Dickinson to start a
four-game series on Friday. First pitch is 3 p.m.
