EMMITSBURG, Md. - Andrew Caron (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) and
Shane Eyler (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) combined for seven
RBIs to lift Mount St. Mary's past Central Connecticut State 12-6
in Northeast Conference (NEC) baseball action on Friday.
Caron smacked a three-run homer in the fourth and recorded a
sacrifice fly in the in the sixth. Eyler doubled home a run in the
second to give the Mount (18-26, 12-13 NEC) the lead it would not
relinquish and then smacked a two-run homer in the sixth. The duo
is tied for the team lead with six homers.
Kyle Kane (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) added a 3-for-4 performance
with three runs scored to give the Mountaineers 3-4-5 hitters a
6-for-13 afternoon with two home runs, seven RBIs and seven runs
scored. In addition, Jake Darr (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson)
added two hits, two runs scored and an RBI in the winning
effort.
Richie Tri paced the Blue Devils (21-17, 10-11 NEC) with three
hits, two RBIs and a run scored while Sean Allaire added two hits,
two runs scored and an RBI in the loss.
Mount St. Mary's used four multi-run innings to take the lead
and never look back to take the first game of the four-game set
against New Britain program.
With the score tied at 2, the Mount scored four times in the
fourth to take a 6-2 lead. Alex Andrews (Vienna, Va./James Madison)
and Michael Foster (Easton, Md./Easton) started the rally with
back-to-back walks before Darr plated Andrews on an RBI single
through the left side. Caron then sent his 3-2 pitch over the
center field wall for a three-run homer to increase the advantage
to four runs.
Central Connecticut State chipped away at the deficit with a run
in both the fifth and sixth. Pat Epps hit a run-scoring single in
the fifth and Tri doubled home a run down the left field line in
the sixth to trim the margin to 6-4.
The Mountaineers answered with a three-run sixth to take a 9-4
lead. Mike Matta (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) opened the stanza with
an infield single, stole second and touched home on Caron's
opposite field sacrifice fly. After Kane was hit by the pitch,
Eyler drilled a two-run shot to left field for a five-run
advantage.
The Blue Devils against scratched at the margin with single runs
in the seventh and eighth to trim the deficit to 9-6. Allaire led
off the seventh with a homer to left center and Sean Miller-Jones
doubled down the right field line to score a run in the eighth.
Mount St. Mary's had a response again in the bottom of the
inning with three runs to put the game away. Darr reached on a bunt
base hit and Caron got on base with an error before Josh Winter
(Timonium, Md./Boy's Latin) plated both runners on double to
center. Zach Helman (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) capped the
three-run stanza and the 12-run outburst with a sacrifice fly to
right.
Kane and Eyler helped the Mount take the lead it would not
relinquish in the second. Kane singled to right center and touched
home on Eyler's double down the right field line. Andrews included
the lead to two runs on a base hit to right to score Eyler for a
2-0 edge.
Central Connecticut State came right back to tie the game at 2
with two runs in the third thanks to a Tri leadoff homer and an
Anthony Scialdone run-scoring double, but the Mountaineers scored
10 of the final 14 runs to come away with the victory.
Kent Worthington (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) improved to
4-2 on the year after allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits
with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work and 125 pitches.
Mount St. Mary's and Central Connecticut State return to action
in the middle two games of the four-game series on Saturday. First
pitch is 12 p.m.
