EMMITSBURG, Md. - Long Island scored twice in the ninth and
withstood a solo homer by Andrew Caron (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro)
in the bottom of the inning to come away with a 5-4 victory against
Mount St. Mary's in Northeast Conference (NEC) baseball action on
Sunday.
Caron paced the Mount (17-26, 11-13 NEC) with two hits and two
RBIs on the afternoon. Kyle Kane (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) posted
two hits and an RBI while Mark Quaranta (Virginia Beach, Va./Loyola
Blakefield) added an RBI double.
After Mount St. Mary's tied the game at 3 with two runs in the
bottom of the seventh, the Blackbirds (12-31, 9-15 NEC) scored two
runs in the top of the ninth to take the lead it would not
relinquish. Julian Castro started the decisive rally with a double
to left center and touched home on Tyler Jones' double to right
center. Drew Walsh then plated Jones with the eventual game-winning
run on a ground out to first and a 5-3 lead.
In the bottom of the inning with two outs, Caron belted a 3-1
pitch over the right center wall to trim the margin to 5-4, but
Gerard Tingos got out of the jam with a ground out to second to end
the game and earn the four-game split with the Mountaineers.
Castro led Long Island with two hits, two runs scored and an
RBI. Jones added two hits, a run scored and an RBI while Albert Faz
contributed two hits and an RBI.
The Blackbirds scored a run in the third to grab an early 1-0
advantage thanks to a run-scoring single by Tingos.
Mount St. Mary's came back to tie it in the fourth. Kane started
the frame by being hit by the pitch and then went to third on Shane
Eyler's (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) single down the left
field line while Eyler was thrown out at second trying to stretch
the base hit into a double. With two outs, Quaranta double to deep
center and nearly missed his first collegiate home run with his
shot off the top of the fence to score Kane with the tying run.
Long Island answered right back in the fifth on Castro's solo
homer to left field to reclaim a one-run advantage. Faz extended
the lead to 3-1 on an infield RBI base hit in the sixth.
The Mountaineers responded to tie the game at 3 with two runs in
the seventh. With one out and Tom Healy (Harrisburg, Pa./Central
Dauphin) at second and Tommy Flynn (Reston, Va./South Lakes) at
first, Caron plated Healy on a single to right field before Kane
knotted the game at 3 by scoring Flynn on a rocket base hit off the
diving third basemen's glove.
The Blackbirds then scored twice in the ninth and held on for
the win.
Costa Kapothanasis (Westbrook, Maine/Cherverus) took the loss
despite gutting out eight innings plus of work on the afternoon and
allowing five runs (four earned) on 12 hits with eight strikeouts
on 135 pitches.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday when the squad
opens up a four-game series with Central Connecticut State at E.T.
Straw Family Stadium. First pitch is 3 p.m.
