Teaneck, N.J. (May 15, 2010)-Mount St. Mary's
scored 10 runs in the top of the ninth to rally past Fairleigh
Dickinson, 12-9, in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday.
The Knights captured game one, 2-1.
The Mount finishes the regular season 20-31 overall and 14-18 in
the Northeast Conference.
Trailing 9-2 in the top of the ninth, the Mount's first two
batters reached on errors to start the rally. Mike Matta had an
RBI double ahead of a three-run homer from Josh Winter that cut the
deficit to 9-6. Jacob Darr and Michael Foster had back-to-back RBI
singles to make the score 9-8 before Kyle Kane's infield single
knotted the game at 9-9. Winter's two-run single gave the Mount
the lead before Alex Andrews rounded out the inning with an RBI
double.
Winter, who had a double, a home run and five RBI in the ninth,
was 3-for-5 at the plate in the victory. Matta went 3-for-4 with
three RBI and three runs scored while Kane, Andrews and Foster
added two hits each.
Patrick Moriarty pitched a scoreless eighth to earn his first
collegiate victory while Matta added a scoreless ninth for his
sixth save.
In the opening game, FDU scored twice in the third and held on
for the 2-1 victory. The Mount's lone run came on a Darr solo
homer. Costa Kapothanasis struck out six while allowing just three
hits in the complete-game loss.
The Mount will now wait and see if it is among the top four in
the Northeast Conference standings to earn a spot in the NEC
Tournament. NEC play concludes next weekend with the Mount on a
bye. The Mount entered today seventh in the NEC standings.
