Teaneck, N.J. (May 14, 2010)-Mount St. Mary's
lost both game of a doubleheader at Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday
afternoon. A walk-off grand slam lifted the Knights to a 12-8 win
the second game after Fairleigh Dickinson won game one, 6-5, on a
walk-off single.
In the second game, the Mount rallied with four runs in the top
of the seventh inning to tie the game, 8-8. Andrew Caron's RBI
single cut the deficit to 8-5 while Shane Eyler walked with the
bases loaded to cut the deficit to two. Mark Quaranta's pinch-hit
two-run single tied the game. The Mount had a chance to take the
lead with the bases loaded and one out, but could not get the
go-ahead hit.
In the bottom of the seventh, Matt Holsman doubled to lead off
the frame. After an intentional walk, Mount pitcher Mike Matta got
a strikeout and a fielder's choice to put runners on first and
second with two outs. After a failed pickoff attempt moved the
runners over, the Mount intentionally walked Mike Martino to load
the bases. Ryan Kresky, however, answered the call by belting a
grand slam to right to end the game.
Michael Foster went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the loss
while Matta and Jacob Darr each had two hits. Kresky was 2-for-4
with three runs and five RBI in the win for the Knights.
In the game one, the Mount opened the scoring in the first game
with three runs in the top of the second inning. Singles by Kyle
Kane and Eyler put runners on first and second with no outs. An
FDU error loaded the bases and Foster drove in the first run when
he reached on another FDU error. Darr's single to left plated two
runs, with the second scoring on an error by the left fielder.
FDU's Holsman hit a solo home run in the third. In the fifth,
Scott Morrison and Mike Eliasen opened the inning with back-to-back
singles to put runners on the corners with no outs. Holsman
followed with a two-base hit to even the score at 3-3. Steven
Laforge's RBI single gave the Knights a 4-3 advantage.
The Mount fought back in the top of the sixth when Quaranta
doubled with one out and scored on a Foster base hit. The Mount
eventually loaded the bases in the inning, but stranded the runners
with a fly out to right.
Mount starter Kent Worthington dodged a bullet in the sixth when
he induced an inning ending double-play with runners on first and
third with one out.
Mount St. Mary's took the lead in the top of the eighth when
Foster singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to
third on a balk. After a pair of outs, Healy came through with a
clutch single through the right side to put the Mount ahead,
5-4.
FDU answered quickly, tying the game with a run in the bottom of
the eighth. With one out, Kresky doubled and came around to score
on Eric Anderson's base hit.
The Knights won the game in the bottom of the ninth. Holsman
led off with a double and scored the winning run on a D.J. Robinson
one-out single.
Worthington struck out four while allowing four runs in 6.1
innings of work for the Mountaineers.
The Mount (19-30, 13-17) concludes its regular season with a
doubleheader at Fairleigh Dickinson tomorrow.
