EMMITSBURG, Md. - Kent Worthington (Hagerstown, Md./North
Hagerstown) tossed a six-hit shutout in the opener and Andrew
Caron (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) capped a four-run rally with an
RBI single in the seventh in the nightcap to help Mount St. Mary's
sweep Long Island in a Northeast Conference (NEC) baseball
doubleheader on Saturday. The Mountaineers won the 4-0 in the first
game and 5-4 in the second contest of the day.
Worthington threw his second shutout of the season after
scattering six hits in a seven-inning complete game to improve to
3-2 on the year. The senior also registered eight strikeouts,
including six in the first three innings.
In the nightcap, the Mount (17-25, 11-12 NEC) fell behind 4-1
before scoring twice in the sixth and twice in the seventh to cap a
thrilling come-from-behind victory. With the game tied at 2, Caron
smacked a line-drive single to right field to plate Zach Helman
(Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) with the decisive run. Caron recorded
two hits, a run scored and an RBI in the two games. Along with
scoring the game-winning run, Helman had four hits on the
afternoon, a run scored and an RBI.
Mike Matta (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) got the win the nightcap
after allowing four runs on nine hits with four strikeouts for his
third win of the season. The senior started the day in center field
and smacked his first homer of the season and scored twice in the
opener. Shane Eyler (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) went 2-for-3
in the second game with three RBIs, including a two-run homer in
the sixth to trim the margin to 4-3. Eyler added a hit and a run
scored in the first game.
Sam Sciamarelli paced the Blackbirds (11-31, 8-15 NEC) with two
hits, two RBIs and a run scored and Gerard Tingos added a hit, two
RBIs and a run scored in the nightcap.
In the opener, Worthington took control on the mound and the
Mount St. Mary's offense gave him four runs to help the Mount to a
4-0 victory.
Matta led off the bottom of the first with a line-drive rocket
that cleared the left center fence to give the Mountaineers a 1-0
lead.
Matta was the catalyst in the third for Mount St. Mary's second
run of the day. The senior walked, stole second and touched home on
Kyle Kane's(Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) single to center for a 2-0
advantage.
The Mount then added two runs in the sixth to seal the victory.
Eyler and Josh Winter (Timonium, Md./Boys' Latin) started the rally
with back-to-back doubles for the first run before Helman plated
Winter on an RBI single to center to cap the 4-0 win.
In the nightcap, Long Island jumped out to a 4-1 margin before
the Mountaineers scored four times in the last two innings to come
away with the victory.
Trailing 4-1, Kane reached when he was hit by the pitch before
Eyler drilled his team-leading fifth home run of the season over
the left center fence to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Mount St. Mary's then scored twice in the seventh to earn the
twinbill sweep. Mark Quaranta (Virginia Beach, Va./Loyola
Blakefield) started the frame with a single to left field before
Helman pushed pinch runner Sam Nott (Harrisburg, Pa./Central
Dauphin) to third on a single to center. With runners on second and
third with no outs, pinch hitter Tom Healy (Harrisburg, Pa./Central
Dauphin) tied the game at 4 on a groundout to second to bring home
Nott with the tying run. After an intentional walk and a foul out,
Caron sent the home crowd home happy with a two-out rocket single
to right field to score Helman with the decisive run.
Long Island jumped out to a 1-0 edge in the contest with a
Sciamarelli solo homer in the first before the Mountaineers tied it
in the bottom of the inning. Caron was hit by the pitch and came
around to score on Eyler's single to center.
The Blackbirds got two runs in the third on Tingos' two-run
round tripper to right for a 3-1 edge. Sciamarelli added a run in
the fourth on a run-scoring single to center for a three-run
advantage, but the Mount scored the final four runs for the
come-from-behind win.
Kane had three hits, an RBI and a run scored in the two games
while Quaranta had two hits in the nightcap.
Mount St. Mary's and Long Island conclude the four-game series
on Sunday at E.T. Straw Family Stadium. Game time is 12 p.m.
