Emmitsburg, Md. (April 30, 2010)-Mount St.
Mary's lost to Long Island, 16-3, in the opening game of a
four-game Northeast Conference series at E.T. Straw Family Stadium
on Friday afternoon.
The Blackbirds (11-29,, 8-13 NEC) broke open the game with an
11-run sixth inning. Long Island's Tyler Jones went 6-for-6 with
three home runs, two doubles and five RBI in the contest.
Jones led off the game with a solo home run to center field to
give the Blackbirds a 1-0 lead. Derek Stupski and Jones added solo
home runs in the second for Long Island.
Trailing 5-0, the Mount scored three runs in the bottom of the
fourth to get back in the game. With two outs and no one on base,
Shane Eyler legged out an infield single ahead of walks by Josh
Winter and Sam Nott. Alex Andrews stepped to the plate and drove a
fly ball to center field that was misplayed, allowing all three
runs to score.
Long Island sealed the win with the 11-run six. Jones led off
the frame with a solo home run while Drew Walsh added a grand slam
in the inning.
Andrew Caron went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles to pace the
Mount (15-25, 9-12 NEC) in the game.
The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at
noon at Straw Family Stadium on campus.
