Emmitsburg, Md. (April 2, 2010)--Joe Kavanagh
came through with a pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the sixth
inning to lift Mount St. Mary's to a 4-3 win over Wagner in the
second game of a doubleheader at the Mount's E.T. Straw Family
Stadium on Friday afternoon. The Seahawks rallied for a 5-4 win in
the opening tilt.
Mount St. Mary's (9-13, 5-2 NEC) scored three times in the
bottom of the fifth inning to take a 3-1 advantage in the second
game. Shane Eyler led off the frame with his second home run of
the season to knot the score at 1-1. Andrew Caron followed with a
single and moved to second on a Mark Quaranta sacrifice bunt. Josh
Winter then walked to put runners on first and second for Michael
Foster.
A Wagner error on a Foster ground ball to second allowed Caron
to score to give the Mount a 2-1 lead. Tommy Flynn followed with a
sacrifice fly to left to push the margin to 3-1.
Wagner (8-11, 5-2 NEC) answered with a pair of runs in the top
of the sixth. Kevin McDonnell singled to open the sixth and Vin
Avella nearly tied the game when his blast to center field hit off
the top of the fence. Avella had to settle for an RBI double on
the play to cut the Mount lead to 3-2. Jon Lucas singled to move
Avella to third and he scored on a Tommy Higgins sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the sixth, Eyler was walked with two outs and
no one on base to start the rally. Wagner's third baseman then
committed an error to put runners on first and second to set up
pinch hitter Kavanagh's go-ahead hit. Kavanagh came through with a
base hit through the left side of the infield to plate Eyler with
the go-ahead run.
Starting pitcher Vincent Molesky retired the first two batters
in the top of the seventh, but walked the next batter. Mount
closer Mike Matta was called into the game, and he got Damian
Csakai to pop out to second base to end the game.
Molesky (4-2) allowed three runs and six hits in 6.2 innings to
post the win. Matta's save was his league-leading fourth of the
year. Wagner starter Jon Lucas allowed four runs (one earned) in
5.2 innings to take the loss. Lucas was also 2-for-2 at the plate
with a solo home run.
In the opening game, Wagner scored five times in the top of the
sixth inning to rally for a 5-4 victory. Matt Logan's two-run
double down the right-field line scored the go-ahead runs in the
inning.
Trailing 4-0 heading into the sixth, Avella cracked a two-run
homer to center field to cut the deficit to 4-2. McDonnell then
doubled and Gaby Ramirez walked to put runners on first and
second. After a strikeout, pinch hitter Seth Boyd greeted Matta,
who came on in relief of starter Brady Feigl, with a double to left
to score McDonnell to make the score 4-3. Logan then followed with
his two-run double to give Wagner the lead.
The Mount took a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in both the third
and fourth innings. In the third, Flynn walked, moved to second
on a passed ball, stole third base and scored on an error to give
the Mount a 1-0 advantage. Eyler then had a bad-hop RBI single to
score Jacob Darr to make the score 2-0.
Caron opened the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to
give the Mount a three-run advantage. Zach Helman followed with a
single and moved to sec ond on an Alex Andrews sacrifice bunt.
Flynn then laced an RBI single to right center field for a 4-0
Mount lead.
Eyler went 2-for-4 at the plate in the opening game for the
Mount while Helman was 2for-2 with a run scored. Feigl allowed
four runs while striking out seven in 5.2 innings. Matta took the
loss, allowing one run in 1.1 innings of relief.
Avella was 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and two RBI to pace
Wagner in the opening game. Csakai added two hits in the win as
well. Matt Watson allowed four runs (two earned) in 5.1 innings to
earn the win. Ian Karlsson picked up the save with a scoreless
seventh inning.
The two teams complete the four-game series with a noon
nine-inning game at the Mount's E.T. Straw Family Stadium
tomorrow.
