Mount Baseball Drops Pair to Bryant

Emmitsburg, Md. (April 18, 2010)--The Mount St. Mary's baseball team lost a pair of games to Bryant at E.T. Straw Family Stadium on campus on Sunday afternoon. The Mount lost 6-0 in the completion of Friday's game that was suspended due to rain. In the originally schedule game, the Mount fell 5-3.

In the 5-3 loss, Bryant (15-18, 7-5 NEC) struck first on a Jeff Vigurs solo home run in the top of the first inning. The Mount answered with single runs in the second and third to take the lead.

In the bottom of the second, Kyle Kane and Shane Eyler led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Andrew Caron then grounded into a fielder's choice to shortstop. The throw to first trying to get Caron was high and Kane scampered home to knot the score at 1-1.

In the third, Tommy Flynn doubled down the left field line to open the inning. With one out, he stole third and then scored when Jacob Darr doubled to right for a 2-1 Mount advantage.

Bryant regained the lead in the top of the fourth. Nick Campbell singled and came around to score on Zakary Cianciolo's two-run homer to center.

Kane evened the score with a solo home run to center in the bottom of the fifth. It was his third home run of the season.

Bryant scored the winning runs in the top of the eighth inning. Jordan English had an infield hit to lead off the gram and Vigurs followed with a bloop single to left. Reliever Mike Matta came into the game and misplayed a bunt attempt on his first batter, loading the bases with no outs. Dylan Stone followed with a sacrifice fly to left to give Bryant a 4-3 lead. Cianciolo added an RBI double in the inning for a two-run advantage.

Kane went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a home run to pace the Mount offense. Flynn, Darr and Caron added two hits each as the Mountaineers had 13 base hits in the ballgame. Starter Kent Worthington allowed five runs (four earned) with six strikeouts in seven-plus innings. Matta pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

Cianciolo was 2-for-4 with three RBI to pace Bryant. Vigurs added two hits and two runs scored while Campbell was 2-for-3 in the win. Peter Kelich scattered 11 hits in seven innings while allowing three runs to pick up the win. Mark Andrews pitched 1.1 innings to earn the save.

The day began with the completion of Friday's suspended game. Bryant was leading 4-0 after eight innings on Friday before rain forced the game to be finished today. The Bulldogs scored twice in the top of the ninth to complete the 6-0 win.

The Mount returns to action on Wednesday with a non-conference game at Penn State.
