West Long Branch, N.J. (April 10, 2010)-
The Mount St. Mary's baseball team lost both ends of a
doubleheader at Monmouth on Saturday afternoon. The Mount lost a
heartbreaker in the opener, 8-7, in 15 innings before dropping the
nightcap, 4-0.
In the opening game, the Mount saw a pair of extra-inning leads
disappear in the loss. With the score tied at 4-4 in the top of
the 14th inning, the Mount scored twice to take two-run
lead. Michael Foster doubled to open the frame and Mike Matta and
Kyle Kane were each hit by a pitch to load the bases with two
outs. Shane Eyler followed and two runs scored on an error by the
shortstop that gave the Mount a 6-4 lead.
Monmouth (9-13, 5-5 NEC) finally got to Mount close Mike Matta
in the bottom of the inning. Matta entered the game in the bottom
of the eighth inning and tossed six innings of scoreless relief to
keep the game tied.
In the 14th, though, Nick Pulsonetti, Cal Costanzo
and Danny Avella each singled to load the bases with no outs.
Bobby Dombrowski fouled out to first and Pulsonetti scored on the
play to make the score 6-5. The two runners moved up a base on an
error, and an intentional walk loaded the bases. The Mount got the
second out on a force play at home, but Ryan Terry was walked with
the bases loaded to force home the tying run.
The Mount regained the lead with a run in the top of the
15th inning. Zach Helman walked and moved to second on
a sacrifice bunt. Foster added an infield single and Tommy Flynn
walked to load the bases. Andrew Caron was up next and his
grounder to first was botched for an error, allowing Helman to
score. Monmouth got out of the jam with a double-play ball.
In the bottom of the frame, Monmouth scored twice to earn the
win. Jamie Rosenkranz walked to open the inning and moved to
second on a Pulsonetti base hit. Costanzo knocked home Rosenkranz
with an RBI single to tie the game. After an intentional walk to
load the bases, Dombrowski was hit by a pitch to force home the
winning run.
Shane Eyler and Matta each went 3-for-6 at the plate for the
Mountaineers in the loss while Foster was 3-for-7 at the plate.
Kyle Kane and Josh Winter added two hits each.
Starter Vincent Molesky allowed four runs (three earned) in
seven innings for the Mount with five strikeouts. Matta allowed
two runs with five strikeouts in seven innings of relief. Costa
Kapothanasis took the loss.
In the second game, Kyle Breese tossed six shutout innings to
lead Monmouth to the 4-0 victory. Brady Feigl struck out six in six
innings for the Mount, allowing four earned runs.
Sam Nott went 2-for-3 at the plate to pace the Mount offense.
Monmouth scored single runs in the first and second and a pair in
the third to earn the win. Avella hit a solo home run while
Costanzo added a two-run single for the Hawks.

tomorrow with a seven-inning game followed by a nine-inning
affair.
