Annapolis, Md. (March 9, 2010)--Mount St. Mary's downed Navy, 6-3,
in a non-conference baseball matchup at Navy's Max Bishop Stadium
on Tuesday afternoon. The win stretched the Mount's win streak to
three games.
Mount St. Mary's (4-5) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with two
runs in each of the first two innings. In the top of the first,
Jacob Darr was hit by a pitch and Kyle Kane walked with two outs.
The runners moved up on a wild pitch and Shane Eyler followed with
a two-run single to center field to give the Mount a 2-0 lead.
In the second inning, Mark Quaranta doubled with one out and Zach
Helman walked. Tommy Flynn singled to load the bases and Tom
Healy's two-run single through the left-side of the infield gave
the Mount a 4-0 advantage.
The Mount added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to grab
a 6-0 lead and held on for the win. In the fifth, Flynn walked and
stole second base. Healy and Eyler walked to load the bases ahead
of Andrew Caron, who walked with the bases loaded to force home
Flynn with the Mount's fifth run.
In the sixth, Flynn and Healy each singled with two outs to set up
Darr, who singled to center field to give the Mountaineers a 6-0
lead.
Navy (10-2) got a run back in the seventh on a Dylan Wheeler RBI
double. In the eighth inning, Jonathan Wright had a two-run single
to cut the Mount's lead to 6-3. In the ninth, however, Buddy
Fields retired the first two Navy batters before allowing a two-out
walk. After allowing a single, the Mount's Karl Lamont got a fly
out to end the game and earn his first career save.
Flynn was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and a stolen base to
pace the Mount offense. Healy added two hits and two RBI while
Quaranta was 2-for-3 with a run scored in the game.
Freshman Vincent Molesky posted his best start of the season,
striking out five while allowing five hits in seven innings to earn
the win and improve to 2-2 on the year.
The Mount returns to action on Saturday, March 13, with a noon
doubleheader against Saint Peter's at the Mount's Straw Family
Stadium on campus.
