Norfolk, Va. (March 7, 2010)-
Mike Matta had three hits and two RBI on offense and picked up
the save to lead Mount St. Mary's (3-5) past Norfolk State, 7-5, on
Sunday afternoon.
Matta went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and a steal while
also pitching the final 2.1 innings of the game to pick up his
third save of the year for Mount St. Mary's.
Kyle Kane went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI while
Joe Kavanagh added two hits and two runs scored in the victory.
Shane Eyler went 2-for-3 at the plate in the win as well.
Costa Kapothanasis started and allowed five runs (two earned) in
four innings of work. Colin Stuver pitched 2.2 scoreless innings
of relief to earn the win.
The Mount took the early lead, scoring five times in the top of
the second inning. Matta opened the scoring with an RBI single to
give the Mount a 1-0 advantage. Kane followed with a two-run
single with the bases loaded for a 3-0 advantage. Josh Winter and
Kavanagh each walked with the bases full to force home two more
runs to give the Mount a five-run advantage.
The Spartans (4-5-1) fought back to even the game at 5-5 by
scoring three runs in the second and two more in the fourth
inning.
The Mount took the lead for good in the top of the fifth
inning. Kavanagh doubled and came around to score on a Matta base
hit up the middle. The Mountaineers added an insurance run in the
top of the eighth inning when Kane singled and came around to score
on a Eyler single and a Norfolk State throwing error.
