Norfolk, Va. (March 6, 2010)-
Mount St. Mary's rallied to defeat Norfolk State, 5-4, in the
second game of a twinbill on Saturday afternoon. Norfolk State
captured the opening game, 2-1.
The Mount (2-5) rallied for the win in the second game on Joe
Kavanagh's two-run double in the top of the seventh inning.
Trailing 4-3 heading into the seventh, Jacob Darr walked and moved
to second on a Kyle Kane sacrifice. Shane Eyler was then
intentionally walked and both runners moved up on a wild pitch.
After a walk to Andrew Caron to load the bases, Kavanagh
followed with his two-base hit to give the Mount the lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Mount closer Mike Matta got the
final two outs to earn the save.
The Mount fell behind 4-1 after three innings of play in game
two of the twin bill. Shane Eyler had an RBI single to plate Sam
Nott, who had doubled, in the top of the third inning for the
Mount's first run.
In the top of the fourth, Tommy Flynn's two-run single cut the
Spartans lead to 4-3.
Flynn went 3-for-4 with two steals and two RBI for the Mount
while Eyler was 2-for-3 with a pair of steals in the win.
Vincent Molesky picked up the win, striking out two in 1.1
innings of relief. Matta pitched 0.2 innings to earn his second
save of the season.
In the opening game, Norfolk State scored twice in the bottom of
the third inning to earn the 2-1 win. Chris Joyce had an RBI
single and Brandon Hairston and RBI groundout to provide the
runs.
The Mount took the lead, 1-0, in the top of the third inning
when Alex Andrews scored on a Buddy Fields groundout. Andrews had
doubled to open the inning.
Brady Feigl took the loss, tossing a complete game with six
strikeouts. He allowed five hits and two earned runs in the
game.
