Kent Worthington Tosses No-Hitter to Lead Mount St. Mary's to 18-0 Win at Quinnipiac

Hamden, Conn. (March 28, 2010)-

Mount St. Mary's senior Kent Worthington (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) tossed a no-hitter to lead Mount St. Mary's to an 18-0 win over Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon.

Worthington struck out nine batters in the game while walking five for his first career no-hitter. In the ninth inning, Quinnipiac's Brian Monack almost broke up the no-hitter with one out, but his flare down the left-field line went foul. Monack was then retired on a grounder to Worthington before Joe Poletsky grounded out to shortstop to end the game.

Mount St. Mary's (7-12, 3-1 NEC) hit a season-high three home runs in the game as the team erupted for a season-high 18 runs scored. It is the first time this year that the Mount has scored in double figures in runs.

Zach Helman (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) went 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run and four RBI to pace the offense while Andrew Caron (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) added a 3-for-4 day as well. Kyle Kane (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) and Jacob Darr (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) added home runs in the win for the Mountaineers.

The Mount opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Tommy Flynn (Reston, Va./South Lakes) doubled to open the frame, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a passed ball. Cleanup hitter Kane then belted his second home run of the year to give the Mount a 2-0 advantage.

Mount St. Mary's took control of the game with a five-run second inning. Caron singled with one out to start the rally. Caron moved up on a wild pitch and a passed ball and scored on a Helman bunt single. Flynn followed with a run-producing single with another run scoring on the play on an error.

Michael Foster (Easton, Md./Easton) added an RBI single and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch to give the Mount a 7-0 advantage.

The Mount added to its lead in the fifth with a pair of home runs. Josh Winter (Timonium, Md./Boys' Latin) and Mark Quaranta (Virginia Beach, Va./Loyola Blakesingled ahead of Helman, who blasted a three-run shot for a 10-0 Mount lead. Foster then singled and scored on a two-run blast from Darr.

Caron doubled in the sixth and came home to score on an error to make the score 13-0. The Mount added three runs in the seventh. Helman and Tom Healy (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) had back-to-back doubles in the inning. Foster had an RBI while Winter had an RBI single in the inning as well.

The Mount rounded out the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth on Winter's two-run single.

Winter finished the day 3-for-6 with three RBI while Flynn, Healy, Foster and Darr each had two hits in the win.

Mount St. Mary's took three of four games in the Northeast Conference opening series. The Mount has now won 10 of the past 12 meetings between the two teams.
