Hamden, Conn. (March 27, 2010)-Mount St. Mary's
won both ends of a doubleheader at Quinnipiac on Saturday
afternoon. The Mount rallied for a 5-2 win in nine innings in the
opening game before posting an 8-3 win in the nightcap.
In the second game, the Mount jumped out to an 8-0 lead en route
to the five-run victory. Mount St. Mary's struck for a run in the
top of the first inning when Tommy Flynn singled, stole second base
and scored on a Kyle Kane base hit up the middle.
The Mount (6-12, 2-1 NEC) took control of the game with a
four-run second inning. Michael Foster had a two-run single to
give the Mount a three-run lead. Flynn added an RBI infield single
and Kane another RBI base hit in the frame for a 5-0 Mount
lead.
In the third inning, Foster singled home Josh Winter for a 6-0
advantage. The Mount made it 8-0 with a pair of runs in the top of
the fifth inning on a Mike Matta two-run single.
Quinnipiac (1-14, 1-2 NEC) finally got to Mount starter Vincent
Molesky with a three-run fifth. Brian Monack had a two-run triple
and Joe Poletsky followed with an RBI single to make the score
8-3. at
Molesky improved to 3-2 on the year by allowing three runs in
5.1 innings . He allowed six hits and six walks while striking out
three in the game. Matta pitched the final 1.1 innings, striking
out one.
Foster went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI to pace
the Mount in the second game while Mark Quaranta was 3-for-4 with
two runs scored. Kane, Flynn and Jacob Darr each had two hits in
the win.
In the opening game, the Mount's Josh Winter belted a one-out,
two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to force extra
innings before scoring three times in the ninth to earn a 5-2
victory.
Trailing 2-0 heading into the top of the seventh, Shane Eyler
singled with one out to put Winter at the plate. Winter followed
by belting his first home run of the season to tie the score.
The Mount scored three times in the top of the ninth to secure
the win. Kyle Kane's infield single led off the ninth. Buddy
Fields pinch ran for Kane and moved to second on an Eyler sacrifice
bunt. Winter then followed with an RBI single down the right field
line to plate Fields with the go-ahead run.
Quaranta and Foster each singled with Foster's base hit up the
middle scoring Winter to give the Mount a 4-2 lead. Matta's RBI
single closed out the scoring, giving the Mount the 5-2
advantage.
Matta, who earned the win with 3.2 innings of scoreless relief,
set Quinnipiac down in order in the bottom of the inning.
Matta struck out two runs and walked a pair while not allowing a
hit in his relief stint. Mount starter Brady Feigl struck out
seven while allowing seven hits in 5.1 innings in the game.
Winter went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI to pace the
Mount offense in game one while Foster added three hits in the
win. Kane finished 2-for-4 at the plate in the game.
Quinnipiac's Chris Migani had a two-run single in the fifth
inning for the Bobcats.
The teams conclude the four-game series with a nine-inning game
tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at the Quinnipiac University Baseball
Field.
